An Inauspicious milestone: Today marks one year since legislation (HB 4070) that would ensure that children in Michigan have access to the legal representation they are entitled to under our Constitution stalled on the floor of the Michigan House. #MILeg
Yes.
ICE agents don't get to carve out a First Amendment exception for themselves.
The Trump administration's retaliation against Mahmoud Khalil for his political advocacy sets a dangerous precedent.
If the government can punish some of us for speech it doesn't like, then everyone's rights are in danger.
Beige graphic with black and red text: "ICE and CBP funding exploded in 2025. Congress must not give these agencies any more no-strings-attached money" and a red bar graph showing ICE and CBP funding gradually increasing from $23B in 2020 to $29B in 2024 before drastically increasing to $169.7B
ICE and CBP are operating with record money and without necessary restrictions.

Civil libertarians, whose criticisms of the DHS project were shouted down in the early days of the War on Terror, now seem tragically prescient.
As debate over (de)funding DHS continues, reread Professor Margulies piece on the lasting impacts of 9/11. In particular, on the modern surveillance state: "ubiquitous state and private surveillance has fundamentally altered our conception of privacy."
We the people are worth fighting for.
Our training series Organizing to Protect Democracy supports your fight for civil liberties in our communities.
RSVP today for our next training on March 11 at 8pm ET.
Meta has deliberately cut civil rights and civil liberties out of its calculus. As an internal Meta memo reasoned, “Many civil society groups that we would expect to attack us would have their resources focused on other concerns.” The company presumably sees a business opportunity in the ongoing assault on American democracy. That’s where Mark Zuckerberg, Meta’s chief executive, is wrong: We are paying attention, and we understand clearly that this technology is part of that very same assault on our rights. We are always ready to fight, and we will continue to defend everyone’s rights — from both the government and Big Tech.
It was recently leaked that Meta plans to quietly roll out smart glasses equipped with facial recognition while civil liberties groups like ours are busy dealing with the Trump administration.
They're wrong. We can walk and demand Meta halt production on these creepy glasses at the same time.

It’s up to all of us to document what's happening in our communities so we can demand accountability for ICE's abuses.
We have your questions about the right to record federal agents answered.
The Trump administration's mass deportation dragnet has unleashed a new wave of government surveillance across the country.
In Minnesota, federal agents continue to surveil, track, and intimidate people for exercising our First Amendment rights.
A growing number of immigrants detained in Michigan are turning to federal courts to challenge being locked up without a bond hearing.

I'm incredibly grateful for the work that the ACLU of Michigan staff does daily to defend civil rights and civil liberties. Please take the time to read this account of one legal fellow's experience at the ICE North Lake Processing Center in Baldwin, Michigan.
"ICE is willing to go to extraordinary lengths to demean and degrade both the people in its custody and those who care about them. We must be equally willing to remain firm in our support of immigrant communities."
No-knock warrants are dangerous and lead to unnecessary violence, as we witnessed with Breonna Taylor's killing in 2020.
Allowing police to forcibly enter our homes without notice or identifying themselves puts our communities at risk and does nothing to make us safer.
Black graphic with a bar chart and text. The bar chart has 2 bars, one that is much shorter and one that is much longer to represent extreme growth. The shorter bar has 144 on top of it, and Jan 2025 underneath it, while the longer bar has 1,479 on top of it and Jan 2026 underneath it. Next to the bar chart it reads "Over 10x as many state and local law enforcement agencies are partnering with ICE compared to when President Trump took office.
Since the start of President Trump’s second term, ICE has raced to enlist local law enforcement agencies in its cruel deportation agenda.

Secretary Noem's legacy is one of racial profiling, abuse by ICE and CBP, free speech violations, and more.
While she is leaving DHS, the anti-immigrant policies devised by White House aide Stephen Miller aren't. Congress must remain firm and deny funding to DHS until they truly rein in ICE.
🏎️ Pack 180's 2026 Pinewood Derby!
This event is a lot of work, especially with nearly 40 racers. My sincerest thanks to Bob, Nathan, Ryan, Kerry, Laurie, and Rob for helping pull it off. We've got a great team of volunteer leaders in our Pack!
An ACLU of Michigan legal fellow and a colleague visiting a potential client detained at Michigan’s largest ICE detention facility had to remove their bras just to enter the building.
But the indignity they experienced was only a glimpse of the cruelty people detained inside face every day.

Our collective nonchalance about the proliferation of mass surveillance is leading to disastrous, if entirely predictable, consequences. This isn't an abstract, faraway threat. See, e.g., MDOT approving CBP automatic license plate readers on state land.
It now appears that the administration may have done an about-face on its voluntary dismissal. However, the caprice only serves to underscore the message: Do not comply. Stand up and speak out.

When ICE agents are working, we have a right to film them in public. Period.
