Farming town rattled by more than 70 'mysterious' earthquakes
After a dozen earthquakes in a single day and more than 70 over the course of February, farmers in Gnowangerup are curious about what is rumbling their paddocks.
Definitely more than 70, but not all can be felt. GSWA field staff were easily feeling magnitude 2+ events while installing the seismographs. Nice to see the 24-hour "drum" image from the @earthquakes.au Seismosphere system featured. Data visualisation at its best!

There is an active earthquake swarm near Gnowangerup in Western Australia. Here is the last 24 hours of recordings from one of GSWA's Rapid Deployment stations. Of yesterday's several hundred earthquakes, the largest on screen was only M2.5. A magnitude Mw5.0 earthquake occurred in this area in 2023

One of the quietest periods for a while - only 19 earthquakes detected in southeast Australia last week.
Meanwhile in the west, our friends at GSWA are installing rapid deployment kits to capture yet another swarm in the southwest, this time near Gnowangerup. Tiny pops are visible every few minutes!

Did you know that last year there was only one magnitude 3.0 quake in Victoria, and it was the state's largest for 2025?
A magnitude 3.1 earthquake near Dargo in early Feb 2026 is the largest in the state this year, with the region's hills shaken hours later by an M2.8 about 100km to the southeast.

If this is the first time you've seen one of our earthquake maps, welcome! They are routinely posted, but may not contain any notable activity. They exist to show that we are not without earthquakes in southeast Australia. This one is from 19 January to 1 February. Largest magnitude was a 2.4 in NSW

Here's 107 holiday break earthquakes, from 22 Dec to 11 Jan. The largest in South Australia (within the map area) was a magnitude 2.8 on Dec 29 near Parachilna. The largest in NSW was a 2.6 near Cootamundra, and Victoria's largest was 0.6 and one syllable smaller: a 2.0 and near Inverloch.

My last trip to Western Australia wasnβt just to collect seismic data, but also involved setting up magnetotelluric stations and deploying networks of nodes to characterise the velocity profile at each site. It was nice to be able to use my drone to get a different perspective of our field work.

Last week a magnitude 4.0 earthquake occurred near the Oodnadatta Track, about 50km west of Marree, SA. This is the seventh M4+ earthquake in the map area so far this year. A magnitude 2.8 quake occurred near Lake Eildon, VIC. Activity continues off Tasmania's north coast after the M3.3 on Nov 30.

8 years ago we made our earthquake data analysis application, Waves, free to download. Prior to that it was in the hands of just a few hundred users. Since then it's been downloaded almost 25,000 times! Windows dominates, but we also have it available for macOS (Intel & Apple Silicon) and Ubuntu.

To those commenting that we are being dramatic by calling these "earthquakes": this is the only precise term. They just vary in energy. Tremor or shake are unofficial terms used help orient readers

We recorded two non-earthquakes in the last 24 hours. The first was on our office seismograph, detecting Oasis fans 5.5km away at Marvel Stadium. The second was picked up by our station in eastern Victoria - likely a sonic boom from a meteor. The sound was reported widely in the region.

Is 200 earthquakes in just over a month normal for southeast Australia? It is, if your seismic network is dense enough and youβre dedicated to detailed data analysis. Staff at the Seismology Research Centre have manually located more than 35000 earthquakes over the last 50 years.
