To say Jerrie Cobb led a life is an understatement.
When @maryhaverstick.bsky.social started working on a film project with Jerrie, the rabbit hole got deeper and darker.

#OTD in 1944, the 8th Air Force flew Mission 250 to the heart of Berlin for the first time.
One of the pilots was Dick Bushong of the 390th BG, and a couple of years ago, I asked him about the mission. I'm pleased to say that Dick is still with us and is approaching 103!

I think it was a process of elimination. They had a horse too...
Gordon Cooper would have turned 99 today.
One of the 'Original 7' Mercury astronauts, here he is walking up the ramp at LC-19 for the launch of Gemini V, August 21, 1965.
During his Mercury mission, he would pretend to be asleep during his rest period so he could take more photographs! π·
I see your inflatable tank, @sodrock.bsky.social, and raise you the Nazi innovation of the fake cow, as seen at B-78 Eindhoven in 1944.

March 6, 1969 - Apollo 9
Without doubt some of the finest photography of the Apollo program and one of my favourite chapters in the book.
The mission was conducted entirely in Earth orbit. Dave Scott is seen poking his head out of the hatch.
2 years later, he walked on the Moon.

Seriously excited for this! As it is about pilots, that totally fits the rules of the show, right @chriskempshall.bsky.social? Right....?
DMZ? I need to break them out of the box again.
A rare photo of Jodrell Bank searching for intelligent life on Earth, with disappointing yet unsurprising results.
.@kitchapman.bsky.social is one of the finest communicators I've had the pleasure of meeting. While I man crush a tad in the latest @15minutebook.club, we also delved into the discovery of Einsteinium and Fermium that required F-84's to fly into the Ivy Mike mushroom cloud.

TODAY IN 1942
Sandy had hoped for a trip today in 1942 but it was AFP Fane who was picked to go to Norway. Taking AA810 Fane was to experience the anti aircraft defences around the Tirpitz before bringing AA810 back home again:
Mission 12, Spitfire AA810, Trondheim and Naval units.

The locking pins on the door had been filed down to make the latch easier to close due to a design flaw in the locking mechanism. McDonnell Douglas attempted to shift the blame onto the FAA for not issuing an airworthiness directive to force them to fix the flaw. The latch was redesigned anyway. 2/2
Police and investigators comb through the debris field of the crashed TK981 in the Ermenonville Forest. The aircraft was travelling at roughly 480mph when it impacted with the ground.
Today, we remember the 335 passengers and 11 crew of Turkish Airlines Flight 981 who were killed when McDonnell Douglas DC-10-10 TC-JAV's rear cargo door blew out #OTD in 1974.
This image shows the debris field in the Ermenonville Forest where the aircraft impacted the ground.
