Yoon Suk-yeol has been sentenced to life imprisonment.
Happy to be in Seoul for the @ipsa.org 28th World Congress.
My deepest gratitude to my fellow panelists and discussants for the engaging session.

It would’ve been a landslide victory if it were a regular election. As a voter, the margin is still narrow and disappointing considering that this election followed a *martial law* and the PPP was complicit.
NEW: South Koreans are on track to elect liberal president Lee Jae-myung after chaotic six months, in an election that followed the impeachment of the leader who declared martial law for the first time in South Korea's democratic history.

Korea on pace to set a record in voter turnout. With about 3 hours to go turnout is over 70%. Turnout is higher in the progressive Southwest than in conservative Southeast suggesting Lee Jae-myung’s victory will be quite decisive.

Hoje acordei como se estivesse de ressaca. Continuo sem palavras sobre o resultado destas eleições. Apenas sei que irei defender sempre Abril nestes tempos difíceis que se avizinham.
April 25th, always.
This poem by Sophia de Mello Breyner resonates deeply: "This is the dawn I was waiting for, the pure day where we emerge from the night and silence, free in time."
A tribute to freedom, memory, and hope. 🇵🇹✊

It's already the most beautiful day of the year ❤️
Lembrando os 51 anos da revolução. Pela liberdade, 25 de Abril sempre! As ruas são nossas ✊
Amazing read for those who woke up later (me)
South Korean President Yoon was removed from office 123 days after attempting martial law, following a unanimous Constitutional Court ruling. People across Korea are celebrating in the streets, while millions in the Korean diaspora watched the decision via livestream.
A quick translation by Korea Pro of the Court's decision. koreapro.org/2025/04/full...
The government of Portuguese Prime Minister Luís Montenegro has lost a vote of confidence, almost certainly pitching the country into its third general election in barely three years.
Third time's the charm, r-right?
I sincerely thank the Fundação Luso-Americana para o Desenvolvimento for awarding me the Papers@USA grant, which made my participation possible. I extend the gratitude to the Association of Korean Political Studies, for puting together the panel and assisting me in the trip to the USA.
I am grateful for the o opportunity to meet scholars whose research has deeply influenced my PhD journey. A special thanks to @profkevingray.bsky.social and @hannes-mosler.bsky.social for the kindness and feedback.
Last week I attended the @isanet.bsky.social anual conference in Chicago. This was my first time participating in this important event and I was fortunate to share a panel with esteemed scholars. It was a rewarding experience to listen to my fellow panelists and learn about South Korea.
1/ The impeachment proceedings against President Yoon are reaching their conclusion.
The Constitutional Court must determine if his December martial law declaration violated South Korea’s democratic order.
Here are the key questions the court must consider:
1/ I've obtained the 101-page indictment against President Yoon Suk Yeol detailing the December 3, 2024 martial law incident. He's charged with leading an insurrection (내란우두머리).
Here's a breakdown of the allegations:
Yoon became the first sitting president to be arrested and tried. While South Korea has already sent several former presidents to prison, Yoon’s case is particularly unique.
Yoon Suk Yeol faces insurrection charges and an impeachment trial that his increasingly aggressive backers dismiss as a communist conspiracy linked to China and North Korea.
My latest for the Guardian:
www.theguardian.com/world/2025/j...
Yoon has been arrested on charges of leading an insurrection. However, an interesting legal debate surrounds his charges. In Korea, insurrection and military rebellion are distinct crimes, with differing penalties under the law.
9/ What makes this particularly alarming is how a far-right group openly embracing symbols of authoritarian violence gained official platform through a ruling party lawmaker at the National Assembly, making a dangerous escalation.
NEW: A study by Yale University and other institutions has found that the Gaza war death toll is likely 41% HIGHER than Palestinian health officials reported.
It also found that over 59% of those killed were women, children and people over the age of 65.
www.reuters.com/world/middle...
Investigators have set out to arrest Yoon, four days after a warrant for Yoon’s arrest was issued. Currently, Yoon’s supporters have gathered around the residence, and clashes between them and the police may occur.
So it begins.
I'm a couple days late but i wish you all a happy new year! Things aren't looking great but I do believe a better world is possible.
It's Friday and that means new report from Gallup Korea. As usual, I'm going to go through the report and put together a small thread on the survey findings.
