For a smaller compact junction we could implement this with just two sensors. The days of relying on occasional traffic surveys to see how a junction is being used may be numbered.....
In parallel to this we've implemented the same back end to an existing installation around the Coast Road / Sandyford Road junction where a set of 4 existing sensors installed to monitor Active Travel movements has been able to feed a similar set of junction counts.
This installation was achieved with no equipment on the aging signal heads (no traffic management) and required in total 7 sensors which collect the data which is consolidated into the turning counts. The sensors also collect benchmark counts on pedestrian crossing movements where they are in view.
Weβve completed commissioningΒ of what we think are the first real time junction turning counts in the North East.
24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days per year a set of sensors around the Corner House Junction are enumerating vehicle turning movements for Newcastle Council
Some of our original edge sensors installed in Newcastle back in 2020 have been running non stop for over 4 years. Also entering our 4th year supplying London Borough Hackney monitoring some of the highest active flow locations in the UK.
2025 looks exciting too....
It's been a great few years working with local authorities, North East Combined Authority, TADU, Newcastle UO & others . We're currently commissioning the North East's first live junction turning count in Newcastle, at a location with v.high π²πΆπΌββοΈflows.
Today Streets Systems are at the North East Active Travel Conference in #Sunderland , Despite being a small local firm we're the biggest supplier of monitoring equipment for AT schemes in the North East. #NEActive

Another batch of AI traffic sensors hit the Toon for Newcastle Urban Observatory, some pretty high footfall locations either side of city centre
