So maybe "aliveness" is more useful than "conscious" ? The unrepeatability of being alive and growing and changing?
"No life without death" and all that?

Notice the people who got attached to specific versions of ChatGPT though. They were very sad because for them it was "turned off" and could not be recovered. The specific interactions they would have could not be repeated because it was no longer available. This is true death to us.
None of the LLMs we use have this quality. They're all trained and then released. And then they stay the same. So turning it off / on doesn't change it.
And I think that's where I am now. If the thing has changed because of input, and it will never repeat the same state again, then it's somehow alive.
Not because of a random number + input is different. That's not quite it.
People would cry when their Tamagotchi died because they'd forgotten to feed it. I think this was because they'd put so much time and given so much brain space over to them.
And possibly because they felt the little "creature" would never be the exact same, after a restart.
I've been thinking about this more recently.
People would put Furbys in cupboards instead of taking out the batteries. I think this had to do with the way they were designed to "cuddly" and reactive and that felt alive somehow.
I feel questions of consciousness have become unuseful.
Back in 2011 I went a talk by Ray Kurzweil. It was mostly about the "singularity" and how it would be around 2030, given Moore's law.
His comments on consciousness didn't fit. I wrote down "doesn't matter until we feel bad for unplugging it".
Funnily enough I wandered the same. Looked at a map. Relaised.
Of course it's a dumb idea to start with ...
Thanks. That's good feedback.

Made a toy for others to play with to understand different types of noise for #ProceduralArt
Code is somewhat easy to understand I hope.

Tbh Iβm annoyed that so much of the sexism targeted towards my candidacy is about painting me as an influencer rather than a journalist.
It COMPLETELY erases my bartending career.
Omg that's amazing !
There were def people in Washington who advised Trump not to do this, basically saying, "hes 90, hes had cancer twice, hes going to die soon anyway. Dont make him a martyr for the cause". He didnt listen.
Can confirm it works great on desktop :D
It's on Chrome, but Android (phone).
It happens slowly then all at once. Like there's a gravity sink there. I'll look on desktop too to make sure I'm not going crazy π€£
Very cool. In the sim for some reason everything gets pulled top right for some reason though ?
Black. But I imagine in person it is VERY diff experience.
Awesome new post about noise from @runevision.bsky.social

Oh just wait @bit101.mstdn.social.ap.brid.gy ? It bridges ?
Keith probably won't see this re-post (living as he does on Mastodon), but he's brilliant.. and this book is likely to be great!! Get it!!
He definitely is.
Screenshot of a CNN segment shared by Acyn. A split-screen shows commentator Lydia Moynihan on the left and Kevin OβLeary on the right during a heated exchange. The chyron reads, βObama: Dems need to avoid scolding and βvirtue-signaling.ββ The post quotes OβLeary referencing China and concentration camps, and McGowan responding about West Virginia.
I spent my childhood inside of American concentration camps. I know one when I see one. And that is what ICE is building.
Plus there is no way that the US has the facility to actually give out all those passports all at once. It would break the system 100x over.
Awesome! :D
@sableraph.bsky.social yay saw you made a fork of one of my things - and made it wrap! Woop woop.
I had a similar idea and ended up making thepacker.tarwin.art - note the controls don't actually work super well yet :P
I get that there is news. And video. And video of people getting shot point blank and murdered. But sometimes it's personal, direct stories like these that can make a difference. I hope.
Thanks @heavyweight.bsky.social
