I think a good thing to do would be to open a new lab studying Drosophila elegans and Caenorhabditis drosophilae, and act as if this was the self-evident default, gasping "that's a crazy fly-worm mashup!" when you hear someone say Caenorhabditis elegans.

I started a loop counting to 1 trillion (兆) in my terminal last week since my 5yo just learned a bunch of words for higher numbers … it's been fun checking it every morning. It should finish sometime this month!

I was thrilled finding one of these ↓ in a lab closing giveaway, since it got me through the early 2000s and is still my favorite.

🧵 After years out of the field, I and my lab are again working on bacterial type IV pili. We have just posted our first preprints, and I'm excited to share what we have discovered.

This shows Neisseria gonorrheae bacteria infecting a human epithelical cell. Here, you can see the pili in red.

That's the thing about this sequence, no matter how many you add it's still not "complete"!
I chose X and O since it shows self-similarity if you highlight X or O

Didn't think about that but it makes sense! for me it was actually this pattern I remember being completely obsessed with when I was around 10; I had a real compulsion to keep reciting/imagining it. I've heard of a few other people reporting the same thing.

Protein structure is more conserved than sequence. Work in 2020 (MBE: academic.oup.com/mbe/article/...), showed 3D data unlocks deeper evolutionary signals. A thought was why not go higher than 3D? 🧵

You can totally point out that some aspects of AI are overhyped, you can believe that AGI is not possible, you can criticize how the companies and governments developing AI are using or being coopted by these tools. There is a lot to criticize.

But "it doesn't work and is fake" is just wrong now.

Together, they connect centromere repeat evolution, karyotype dynamics, and meiotic recombination outcomes, revealing how holocentric genomes evolve and function. 🧬👇

'Tis well an old age is out,
And time to begin a new.

CHORUS OF ALL
All, all of a piece throughout;
Thy chase had a beast in view;
Thy wars brought nothing about;
Thy lovers were all untrue.
'Tis well an old age is out,
And time to begin a new.

Added many features (search, phylogenetic tree navigation, session persistence) to the excellent terminal-based multiple sequence alignment viewer github.com/sib-swiss/termal and have made a landing page at msafara.carltonlab.org
