This is the best lede I've seen in a tech story in...years? There should be an award just for ledes.
A digital illustration of an anthro akita, named Cortado, holding a potted monstera plant smiling with his tongue poking out. He is wearing a yellow bandana around his neck. The illustration uses the browns of Cortado's pelt and the green from the monstera plant to create small doodle designs in the background, almost blending in to the background.

A digital illustration of an anthro red fox, named Slash, smiling wide with his mouth open, displaying his sharp teeth. Slash has various striped markings with black, orange, blue, and white. He has his right paw up in a clawing motion, showing off his pointy red nails. Slash is wearing a navy blue collar that says "service pup" on it with a blue dog tag hanging off with his name engraved on it. Slash is almost melting into the background behind him. It uses the colors of his pelt to have wavy, curly, and flowing doodles and streaks.

Narratively having Ever Given getting stuck in 2021 to set up Hormuz in 2026 is great foreshadowing. You want your audience to understand the basics of international shipping in a lower stakes context so you drop the real plot without a lot of saggy exposition about the minutiae of cargo logistics.
Hmm coin designs kind of uninspired sadly I like the geometric reverse patterns but common obverse gets same-y
this would be a great place to die

In light of the banning of more flavors of smut, I present the glory-hole gambit for our payment-processor overlords.
Ahhhh to be a blissful burrito.
Stumbled upon this and itβs still one of my favorite pieces of gift art Iβve ever gotten by @ator.bsky.social
It was right around when Wreck-It Ralph came out and everyone was making their display names versions of it.
Achieve-It Atsu was what I went with.
Nostalgic for simpler times.
I try to never post the NY Times articles and drive traffic to the institution whose negligence got us here, but this is a good article about this... As an old Black man in America I can say I have spent a lifetime having undesired unrequested conversations about my "shoe size."
I say this all the time privately. It is really under appreciated and researched my hypothesis that much of Republican politics, anti-Black racism and manosphere stuff is not so secretly a proxy for insecurity about "shoe size."

You can see at the end here their digital animation process. They did not use cels. They created a single cel for reference so they could recreate the technique digitally.
The backgrounds however ARE traditional art + digital and several real effects were used.
Stunning work; not cel animation.
graphic design shitpost: Stick figure of human leg with the knee labeled "monetizable knee"; stick figure of digitigrade leg, with the knee labeled "uncouth zoophile knee"; text: Ankle unrelated, "we are very smart" - payment processors. Separate graphic on other half - illustration of a doggy, text: Woof woof! I am a representational, animal-shaped character! A hot one, some might say. People are often attracted to me, which make sense - I am depicted with human-like behaviors, and am often drawn as a representation of idealized or exaggerated human experiences. I'm not just a talking dog - I can be a representation of the artist's aspiration to be more playful, more confident - or of something they already love about themselves. Animal-shaped characters have been a part of human expression as long as we have made art - and that tradition will outlive the powers which seek to control and divide us today. Er, grr bark, I mean.

Black-and-white pencil drawing on a small piece of textured watercolor paper showing the head of a coyote/wolf/dogβ with its eyes closed and its mouth open in a sideways view. Only the front of the face is visible in profile, with the mouth wide open and teeth bared. but not in anger but in exultation. The darkly shaded nose points upward and the eye is closed in an expression of effort or song. Loose, quick lines around the muzzle and cheek suggest fur, giving the sketch an energetic, expressive feel. The paper rests on a soft, dimpled fabric background.

Tl;dr I don't think it makes sense to use these terms that are fundamentally about housing or stuff with low environmental impact but high perceived or aesthetic impact for something like a datacenter that will literally raise the bills poison with noise pollution and cause harms.
And for stuff with measurable negative impacts, well... we know what happens. Everyone goes "not in my back yard" so the nasty things get built in poor people's back yards because they have the least ability to fight back. But that falls more on environmental racism than the urbanist debate.
But datacenters are not housing and they're not a windmill or solar farm. They have real environmental pollution concerns and measurable negative impacts on neighbors (unlike new housing or nuclear power plants which just have *perceived* or *anticipated* negative impacts).
YIMBY was/is a political movement in response. "Yes we want more housing in our back yards, let's solve the housing crisis by building more". It is specifically a New Urbanist rallying cry and meant to oppose left-sounding objections to new housing stock. This recasts NIMBY in a new light.
Unfortunately as social movements tend to go the idea of a "NIMBY" and "YIMBY" had been twisted beyond recognition by the game of telephone. NIMBY as a term was descriptive - people who oppose development on the sole basis of it being close to them, mostly housing or green energy
