The education system in the US is broken in a lot of fundamental ways, and focused, individual schooling tailored to fit the child can be incredibly effective.
But despite all of that, there's no way to manage homeschooling societally in a way that doesn't enable all of the abuse as well.
I was homeschooled secularly, and had a pretty good time of it. I was able to learn at my own pace, pursue my interests. I had good friends who I hung out with regularly. Being a closeted trans girl in the early 90s/2000s, I was spared abuse and bullying that I would have faced in school.

yeah even when I kind of knew already I delayed for like 2 years because "eh im doing fine, and transitioning seems like it would be a huge hassle."
And then when I did it was still such a huge, stark contrast. Would never go back.
Lots of great parental feelings in this chapter but I really loved the sense of like... reckoning with nostalgia, seeing old things in a new light and the sense of loss because you never got to experience them as a person.
