Exciting times ahead!

Today marks the first day of the Loeff Lab at Leiden University Medical Center in the Netherlands πŸ‡³πŸ‡±. I’m thrilled to begin this new adventure and continue exploring microbial defense mechanisms and their applications through an integrative structural biology approach.

Dorado v1.0.0 and the v5.2.0 basecalling models a blog for miscellaneous bioinformatics stuff

New blog post!
In it, I benchmark the new version of Dorado from @nanoporetech.com, which comes with new DNA basecalling models. Short version: big accuracy gains for hac, small improvements for sup.
Check it out for the full results:

What's Happening Inside the NIH and NSF

A long post about what’s happening to the science funding agencies in the US and why. As mentioned, this one just kept getting longer even as I kept stripping curse words from it.

Well the award for most cowardly, boot-lickingest academic society has squarely gone to the American Society of Microbiology, who has taken down features of various non-white scientists. Absolutely pathetic behavior. Those articles are now coming up as β€œunder review”. Truly sickening cowardice here.

I'm really looking forward to this episode. Pat's youtube videos have helped me a lot in getting a foothold in bioinformatics.

The Nobel Prize in Chemistry 2024 Congratulations to David Baker, who was recognized for computational protein design, and to Demis Hassabis and John M. Jumper, who were recognized for protein structure prediction. These achievements also celebrate the work of the PDB depositor community and the PDB archive that underpinned development of their prediction methods.

Happy Birthday PDB, announced #OTD in 1971 In Nature New Biology.
Today we celebrate the 53rd anniversary of the Protein Data Bank and the PDB depositor community, and congratulate the 2024 Nobel Prize in Chemistry Awardees
