One guideline I like to use is if more than one person complains about something.

They’re not necessarily right about how to fix it, but they’re always right that it’s confusing or broken.

Take those signals to heart. For every person who complains, other folks are struggling in silence.

If you’re building anything for people to use, it’s really difficult to make it intuitive to use, especially if you have to break existing patterns.

What seems obvious to you isn’t obvious to everyone. It’s helpful to remember that when reading support questions.

Keep an open mind.

My day job is writing technical documentation for a 30+ year old product. Often we’ll have to make a call on how much background to include in a technical article. You don’t have to start with a new universe each time, but you also can’t assume what people know, because humans learn differently.

I’m constantly reminded about assumed knowledge.
