A similair effect could occur around development of open-source software. As there is less incentive to build and support new libraries and frameworks, this effectively could wither the whole ecosystem. Feels like a recursive effect, reinforcing current state and uptake of closed source.

How Generative and Agentic AI Shift Concern from Technical Debt to Cognitive Debt This piece by Margaret-Anne Storey is the best explanation of the term cognitive debt I've seen so far. Cognitive debt, a term gaining traction recently, instead communicates the notion that …

Short musings on "cognitive debt" - I'm seeing this in my own work, where excessive unreviewed AI-generated code leads me to lose a firm mental model of what I've built, which then makes it harder to confidently make future decisions simonwillison.net/2026/Feb/15/...

A thin crescent Earth in the black of space and sun glare. NASA/Apollo 15/Kevin M. Gill

A crescent view of Earth seen through the lunar module window of the outbound Apollo 15 mission in late July 1971. Along with the thinly illuminated Earth, the camera picked up a lot of sun glare on the thick window glass.

As individual/company I am fine to build upon abstractions or take dependencies on 3rd parties that are stable and sustainable. However if ourselves, we (at scale) generate, depend and build abstractions/systems we don't understand anymore, but still need to maintain, we set ourselves up for failure.

Why Spec-Driven Development Can Be Iterative, Incremental, and Agile - Martinelli Whenever I talk aboutΒ AIUPΒ andΒ Spec-driven Development, I often hear the same concern: β€œThis sounds like Waterfall.” That reaction is understandable. For many developers, words likeΒ requirements,Β spec...

New blog post ✍️
Spec-driven development is not a return to waterfall.

AI makes coding faster, but speed was never the real problem. The real bottleneck is still requirements and specifications.

LLM code gen is allergic to software design.

It's a side-effect of limited context - drives it to primitive obsession and a bunch of other smelly designs.

You can navigate it to good outcomes, but it's very reflective of the difference between "scripts" and "software" if you don't pay attention.

Let’s talk about β€œMove fast and break things.” First of all, Facebook itself changed its motto to β€œMove fast with stable infrastructure” in 2014. So much for breaking things, at least if you’re a soulless corporate behemoth.

Why AI won’t work as a software development abstraction | Rob Bowley

The idea of AI as a new abstraction for software keeps coming back – prompts as the source of truth, code as an artefact.

Why it won't work any time soon, even if things like non-determinsim and hallucination become solved problems.
