Compared to other forms of economic disruption, like time-limited or corporation-specific boycotts, or calling out from a day of work, a rent strike could pose an unwieldy, unpredictable economic problem for capital, which could force a political response.
HOW WOULD A CITIES-WIDE RENT STRIKE WORK? This only works if it is real. The strike cannot be just vibes-based, or exist only on social media. Twin Cities Tenants has organized support from major labor unions including Service Employees International Union Local 26 (8,000 janitors, airport workers, security guards in the Twin Cities) and SEIU Healthcare MN/IA (9,000 home health aides and nursing home workers), Unite HERE Local 17 (6,000 hotel, stadium, and restaurant workers), ATU Local 1005 (2,300 transit workers), and CWA 7250 (600 retail workers). These unions are actively organizing their members towards March 1 rent strike. Plus, Take Action Minnesota committed 1500 of their members, mostly parents and teachers, to get strike ready, and Unidos MN is moving the pledge to 8,000 members.
