Venezuelaโs Orinoco Mining Arcโlike much of the Amazonโis being destroyed by a violent nexus of criminals and corrupt officials. The Maduro raid didn't change a thing. Environmental crime now blends so deeply into the economy that itโs nearly untouchable, says Mark Ungar in the latest WOLA Podcast:

The October-January Western Hemisphere war powers votes are here:
Just 2 senators didn't vote with their party on yesterday's Iran war powers resolution:
- Rand Paul (R-KY) voted with the Democrats, as he has on past Venezuela and "boat strikes" resolutions
- John Fetterman (D-PA) voted with the Republicans, as he did on a "boat strikes" resolution

If just 1 or 2 Republican senators had voted to assert congressional war powers on "lethal boat strikes" and Venezuela, this White House wouldn't have taken it as a green light to start a new war today on the president's whim.
At a time when so many big institutions and corporations have been caving to authoritarian bullying, I thank @anthropic.com for not doing that.
Those of us who remember the Cold War recall that it was the _other side_ that would order firms to produce things at their command.
"Our heads are exploding over the news that DoD reportedly shot down a Customs and Border Protection drone using a high-risk counter-unmanned aircraft system. We said MONTHS ago that the White House's decision to sidestep a bipartisan, tri-committee bill to appropriately train C-UAS operators and address the lack of coordination between the Pentagon, DHS and the FAA was a short-sighted idea. Now, we're seeing the result of its incompetence."
Looks like DOD mistook a CBP drone for a party balloon.
The anti-drone lasers seem to work pretty well. The people? Not so much.

This is just February. 25 dead in 19 days. Do not get numb to this.
You โ by the way, we havenโt had a strike in the Caribbean Basin in almost five weeks. Do you know why? Itโs not because we stopped looking. Itโs because no one wants to get on a boat anymore and do that. So itโs been effective at cutting that down. Now, thereโs been strikes in the Pacific.
Southcom just announced its 3rd lethal boat strike in the Caribbean in an 11-day period.
Here's something Marco Rubio said about the Caribbean back in December. (www.state.gov/releases/off...)
This "boat strike" policy, while revoltingly criminal, isn't even having its vaunted deterrent effect.

Latin America-Related Events in Washington and Online This Week
6 events about Latin America this week, that I know about, that can be attended in person in Washington or online anywhere:
Among the counter-organized crime policy options the US promotes in Latin America, "taking out top bad guys" gets big resources. Breaking corrupt links to government, governing with accountability, and pursuing alternatives to prohibition (which inflates drug profits) do not.
So expect violence.
We can expect a short-term (or maybe more than short-term) spike in violence after today's killing of organized crime boss Nemesio Oseguera in Mexico. The country's most powerful cartel could fragment. Competitors may see an opportunity.
True, but we need to think of this as "organized crime" and not just "drug trafficking." Drugs are one income stream among many (precious-metals mining, migrant smuggling, human trafficking, extortion, etc.)โso the link between organized crime and states/financial systems needs way more attention.
This is big. Nemesio Oseguera was the most powerful remaining organized crime leader in Mexico.
He was also sort of "old school," though. As @insightcrime.org pointed out a few years ago, today's most influential criminal bosses aren't hiding in the mountains; they're embedded in polite society.
