I unwittingly ended up living in the nexus of #π¦vπ #birdvfish #birdsvsfish My background is inπ¦ecology and I am now working withππ(and still avidly birding) (anything I publish is my personal opinion and not necessarily the opinions or position of NJDEP)

workaround for AGEPRO if you have restrictive capabilities on your work computer that make you use OneDrive (and Windows in general) open powershell and set your home path for the session:
Set-Variable -Name HOME -Value "C:\Users\whatever" -Force
...then run the command line version of the program
Tonglen meditation is a powerful practice of compassion and transformation. By breathing in the pain or suffering of others and breathing out love, relief, and healing, we cultivate empathy and deepen our connection to the world.Β
2026 1st bird of the year for me yesterday was a song sparrow that has been overwintering in my yard :)

at my first meeting of the Mid-Atlantic chapter of @amfisheriessoc.bsky.social great conference so far! a perk is that there is 1 session, so everyone gets to see all the locally focused talks, and stakeholders/anglers/commercial sector are represented here too! nice to get everyone in the same room
i happen to know where said vessel is stashed, though not the repair status...when we did the biking challenge, we had tire pumps with us/tire change know-how...which begs the question, have we yet discussed the essential birding big day skill of hot-wiring?π€
Fair warning @woodcreeper.bsky.social, my plan to help Stephanie achieve her next WSoB goal involves us stealing your boat. It's OK, you can still pilot it. You just need to whisper "I'm being kidnapped by bird pirates" as we leave harbor.
@birdv.fish and @spiffybirder.bsky.social will back me up.
Birding the gender gap - documentary on how female birds have been under-researched, and the birders addressing that issue. Well worth a listen. www.bbc.co.uk/sounds/play/...
Lovely documentary "Birding the Gender Gap" right before my prog.
Does what it says on the tin.

thank you again so much for covering this story Daniel! :)
was so thrilled to be included, and have great memories of our day! many thanks to the host who followed us around for the dayπ
I had a bumblebee already getting into the pollen in my garden at 6:49am, so this is my reminder to self to catch the insects when they are sluggish and easier to photographπ
A female Western Gull was recorded riding 150km in a garbage truck from San Francisco to a compost facility in Central CA, probably to forage. TWICE. An innovator, an icon, a genius.

Truly, thank you so much for this program! It is both fun and informative, and a great way to also meet fellow first year DEP employees across bureaus!π
Todayβs session is presented by the bureau of business administration, which is great because itβs perhaps the bureau I know the least about! Weβre starting the morning with the financials: learning about the different units covering federal grants & aid, accounting, licensing etc.
As a first year employee of @dep.nj.gov I feel fortunate to be able to participate in the new (as of last year) program βthe fish & wildlife experience.β Roughly monthly, we get to travel to a site to learn more about what a different bureau in our org does. I feel valued as an employee for this opp

Photo of a young woman wearing sunglasses and holding a mistnetting pole. And smaller inset phot by MIchael Klotz shows a female Common Goldeneye. Text on the graphic says: "Jessica "Goldeneye" Gorzo Jessica Gorzo is a researcher who has carried her academic background in wildlife ecology to several different roles. Currently, she is a research scientist working for New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection (NJDEP). She works in the Fish & Wildlife department in marine fisheries, though her academic and career background prior to this position has been largely focused on birds. She applies her avian ecology background in her current role to predator-prey and ecosystem-level modeling, for the purpose of holistic and informed management of marine resources."

Itβs time for another This Month in Birding, this time for April, despite the fact that this episode technically comes out in May. Thatβs bonus for May rather than a loss for April. Listen to Gabriel Foley, Frank Izaguirre, and Purbita Saha chat with host Nate Swick this week: www.aba.org/72239-2/
gross but cool nature note (so I'll spare you the pics): found part of black duck carcass near my office. the crop was full of snail shells...
from Birds of the World: "In coastal New Jersey, animal foods are most of diet (92%, n = 40); salt grass snails and killifish predominated (Costanzo 1988)."
Federally managed fisheries of the mid-atlantic fisheries management council (MAFMC): fisheries impacts by members states in landings, jobs and dollars. Most recent year (2022).
