Republicans are using kids as a smokescreen for what Big Tech lobbyists want: a national surveillance program to harvest our data with zero protections for people and their privacy.

We must fight this dangerous expansion of surveillance technology.

This is exactly right.

Age verification / online ID check legislation literally forces companies to collect MORE data on children (and everyone else) not less.

We desperately need privacy, antitrust, and algorithmic justice legislation.

Not censorship bills like KOSA and expanded surveillance.

ICE detains reporter Estefany RodrΓguez in Nashville - Nashville Banner Reporter Estefany RodrΓguez, detained by ICE with no arrest warrant, may face deportation. Her attorneys seek immediate review of the legality of her case.

ICE has arrested and detained a Nashville journalist who reported stories critical of ICE. She’s married to a U.S. citizen and has been seeking asylum here after fleeing death threats in Colombia because of her journalism there.

They’ve already sent her to Louisiana.

Congress Is Considering Abolishing Your Right to Be Anonymous Online The bipartisan push to remove anonymity from the internet is ushering in an era of unprecedented mass surveillance and censorship.

You should be able to criticize your government anonymously online.

Full stop.

"Age verification" legislation is just a pretty name for "forced online ID checks," meaning everything you post is associated with your government name

We have to stop this.

God if nothing else its nice to see -someone- in congress actually say the real facts on this shit rather than just spouting off the same heritage foundation talking points ad nauseum

I hope journalists covering tech caught this. It was by far the most unexpected and newsworthy moment of the hearing today

I've definitely got some criticisms of AOC but she's a damn sight better than her colleagues.

as much as i think AOC is a sheepdog and a total sellout and turncoat on most issues, still good to see she hasn't sold out on everything. good on her for speaking the truth on this at least.

What if we simply make selling data illegal

The think tank that was over-quoted by the legislators of the NY age verification law is connected to people like Ajit Pai and Carr. These are monopoly-supporting puppets. bsky.app/profile/vexo...

Flock vs. FOIA: The Suppression Manual Flock coaches police on denying records requests, inserts itself into the legal process, and sells a 'transparency portal' its own staff calls useless.

"Flock’s document goes through every category of public record related to its system to identify possible exemptions, suggesting ones for police investigations, security exceptions, and privacy reasons. Throw exemptions at the requester and see what sticks."

We thank @aoc.bsky.social for speaking the truth about age verification in the House E&C hearing today! As she stated plainly, and we agree, age verification is a smoke-screen for censorship. It is NOT about kids safety!

BREAKING: An open letter with 60,000 people was sent to @housecommerce.bsky.social detailing opposition to age verification bills

We are the people who grew up on the internet. If anyone knows about harms it caused, it's us. Not parents, not congress, us.

KOSA creates a "duty of care" requiring social media platforms to prevent "harmful" content. It would empower FTC Chair Andrew Ferguson, who considers transgender healthcare and LGBTQ content to be threats to children, to decide what counts as "harmful." @fightforthefuture.org

Whether it's ChatGPT or some other company, no one should be building tech that enables killer robots & mass surveillance.

Congress should ban both of these things. Until they do people should be boycotting to hit companies like ChatGPT where it hurts! Pledge to boycott now: quitgpt.org

@garbageday.email hit the nail on the head with this one!

If the comparing Meta Ray-Bans to a Cybertruck doesn't send the message it needs to about how these mass surveillance tools are a terrible idea, then what will actually get through to you?

Real smart move on Ray Ban's part here, hitching their iconic product to the Sex Pest Hell Technology. This is definitely the kind of thing you want your brand chained to. Ideally your eyewear apparelβ€”especially if it's your only productβ€”is expressly unwelcome in family spaces and courts of law. 😎

If you see someone using one of these things, it's your moral obligation to slap it out of their faces.

Our ability to see news online about what the many tentacled monster that is U.S. imperialism is doing in Iran, Cuba, Venezuela, Palestine & more will be stripped away if lawmakers succeed with passing KOSA.
