Narratively having Ever Given getting stuck in 2021 to set up Hormuz in 2026 is great foreshadowing. You want your audience to understand the basics of international shipping in a lower stakes context so you drop the real plot without a lot of saggy exposition about the minutiae of cargo logistics.

So many red state races are something like..

Democrat: War hero with a master's degree in public policy who was caught on camera running into a burning building to rescue orphans.
Republican: Adjudicated sex pest who inherited dad's car dealership.

Election result: R +18

And just so anyone doesn’t misread and take offense at this I’m talking about Andrew Cuomo. Not about everyone in New York City who owns a car. I own a car. It’s just that I realize that that car imposes costs that I’m willing to pay.

I just made this design, based on the "72 Pencils" sculptures by George Hart: www.georgehart.com/sculpture/pe.... George's design consists of 72 pencils arranged in a triangular lattice. His bundles of 18 pencils are arranged in a hollow hexagon pattern and are glued together. In this version, I

Here's my bottom line:

Much of what they are doing is bad.
Much of what they are doing is unpopular.
Pushback is working.
We are winning.
Keep fighting.
Be creative.
Push for what you'd want.
Allow for insiders and outsiders.
Realize that change takes time.
Reduce harm in the meantime.

I see this a lot in the church these days. Churches that are still trying to “rise above everything that divides us” are pretty much signaling to me that they’re not serious about my belovedness before God.

I have a thought about the ambient conversation.

Performative support for marginalized groups is a good thing, but it is mostly to let fuckheads know that they need to reexamine their assumption that fuckheadedness is commonplace.

virtue signaling is good! it's good to signal virtue, it's good to practice virtue! it's bad to be so cynical and bitter that you can't even see that.

in a world where cruelty is being exported at scale both online and in the streets, it is extremely important to share your values and to signal to other people what you think is right.

Mathematicians have by far the best, most mature, least insane reaction to LLMs showing up.

Honestly, I don't think there's any field of study that adapts better to major IT advances than mathematicians.

The idea that America isn’t for everyone who wants to be an American is something that makes my blood boil. Posting a photo of yourself as a Congressman smiling next to these words is wicked. It’s antithetical to the concept of America.

The problem with this “sacrifice for our freedom” language is that the Trump administration cannot articulate a single half-plausible reason it did this, didn’t bother to explain to the public it was starting a war in the first place, and has changed its explanation for why three times in a week.
