Even if they had a hundred times the munitions that they actually do, it still wouldnt be enough to "successfully execute Operation Epic Fury" because its an idiotic war started by a dumbass with no actual goal. It cant be successful because there are no success criteria to fulfill.

... And that its easier to blame foreigners than to admit that that country never really existed. And because we cant go back to a country that never existed and we cant recreate that nostalgia IRL immigration will always be "too high" no matter how few people actually come.

Is it the same in the UK as in Germany?
That is to say, that the problem with immigration being too high isnt that immigration is actually too high. Its that for a specific type of person the country as it is now doesnt fit the idealized country of their nostalgic memories. ...

A couple of the Discworld novels visit the dwarves in their underground realm. I think The Fifth Elephant and Thud! of the Ankh-Morpork City Watch series. Very well written, as all Terry Pratchett is, but obviously more comedic than something like LotR.

The thing with Platner is that there are only two possibilities: Either he is at a minimum tolerant of Nazism and anybody who is tolerant of Nazism may as well be a Nazi themselves. This is the most likely one. The other possibility is that hes incredibly unlucky, incompetent, and intellectually ...

The story of the walls of Jericho surely tells us that angry horn blowing will lead to destruction. They did not know of cars and thus used the language they had.

Is there any more nuance to it than that a lot of mutants live essentially in small town or rural America, but spiderman lives in one of the most cosmopolitan, diverse cities in the world? And even there he gets a lot of shit from people like J Jonah Jameson? Because thats what I always thought.

Honestly, I hope Elon wins. That way, in the future, when someone wants to use the phrase "Shoot for the moon and even if you miss you'll land amongst the stars", we can change it to "Shoot for the moon and even if you miss you might still hit Elon Musk" and I think that's beautiful.

Mike Johnson wants you to know that the government isn't going to burn in hell for their immigration enforcement via cruelty stance because god only asks individuals, not the government, to love their neighbors. He of course, being an individual, will burn in hell but that is neither here nor there.

It wouldnt even solve all our problems. It would kind of solve one problem. And cause a billion more. Id much prefer the magic, thank you very much. At least the problems that would cause are fantastical and interesting.

... by the time we have the tech necessary to build one (by transporting material from other star systems), we wont need to. Quite aside from which dyson spheres are massively impractical and useless to begin with. If you could easily build one now, you still shouldnt want to because they suck.

I do think that you shouldnt be allowed to call yourself a "tech" anything if you dont comprehend at least at a basic level how mindbogglingly huge the sun, and space in general, is. Like the suns surface area is 12 THOUSAND times that of the earth. To get enough matter you wouldnt just need to ...

Excommunication is still a thing. The actual consequences are just a lot less given the church is no longer a center point of most peoples lives like it was in the middle ages. The most common is probably automatic excommunication for anyone who procures an abortion or aides another in doing so.

Not in the 1860s. When he says "contemporary" he means contemporary to the Confederacy, like the second French empire, the ottomans, Austria Hungary, Prussia, and the British empire, not today's European armies.

And I say CSA artillery here, but really that should be union artillery (for whom the same goes). Because most of the CSAs artillery was captured northern pieces because the south did not have the infrastructure to make quality artillery.

And thats just pure numbers+logistics. Artillery was the king of the 19th century battlefield and prussias was lethal. The best CSA artillery used wrought iron. By the 1860s, Prussian artillery was steel. The C64 field gun, prussias standard, outranged the best CSA artillery by something like 30%.

And, tbc, the Franco-Prussian War was over in less than a year. The armies mobilized but the countries, and economies, involved in no way went to a full war footing. As evidenced by Frances army only being 2x the size of the CSAs while Frances population was 8x the size of the CSAs free population.

The CSA would have been vastly outnumbered by any contemporary western european great powers army. And these powers had much, much better infrastructure, from transport to heavy industry to just food production and pretty much everything else, to support their armies.

The CSA had a total of about a million troops over the course of a war, with a highpoint of about 400k soldiers at one point. During the Franco-Prussian War about 5 years later, France deployed a total of 2 million with a peak field army strenght of 700k. Prussia 1.5m and 950k.
