“In an increasingly dangerous world, critical national security tools such as personal security clearances and safeguarding classified national security information must be free of partisan considerations and abuse.”

Hegseth’s “breath of fresh air” comment is a grotesque insult to every ally who has fought and died next to Americans for generations, as if they were feckless, “woke” weaklings by comparison. Hegseth is a disgrace.

We may live to see the day when Trump is hoisted on his biggest, sharpest, most gold-leafed petard... Every so often, our universe certainly demonstrates a deep and satisfying sense of irony.
If there is anything “woke” here, it’s your self-serving pretense of toughness built on the backs of those who did the fighting you never would.

”The country has already begun to pay the price, with American lives lost in uniform. The American people deserve clarity before the price climbs higher. And before the remaining off-ramps narrow and escalation hardens into a lengthy and dangerous conflict.”
Authoritarians are often confused about math. Trump is no exception.
Rep. Neguse outlines strong evidence of procurement abuse and apparent self‑dealing that may violate federal procurement and conflict‑of‑interest laws, and he is right to question whether OIG is looking into this matter.

Congress played a significant role in creating the “imperial presidency” [by] passing legislation that delegates its authorities to the executive. Doing this avoids “tough votes” in Congress and results in Congress abdicating its constitutional role.
Mike Johnson seems to think (or at least would try to have us believe) that following the Constitution “plays right into the hands of the enemy.” Perhaps he needs to do some thoughtful reflection on who the enemy really is. #holdfast
Noem keeps insisting her officers “follow protocol and procedure.” But if those protocols themselves violate people’s constitutional rights, that defense is meaningless.

“It is well beyond time [for Congress] to…“support and defend” our Constitution. Their failure to do so to date is in large measure responsible for the ongoing death and destruction currently unleashed across the Middle East.”

Trump isn’t just isolating the US from the world. He’s telling the world he thinks he rules it.

It’s a classic authoritarian move to deny material constraints and dismiss professional military advice.
Trump’s boast that US munitions are “virtually unlimited” and wars can be fought “forever” is aimed at one audience: the Pentagon officials and analysts who’ve been warning that our high‑end missile stocks are nowhere near unlimited.

If “America First” meant what Trump says it does, Americans wouldn’t be stranded in the Middle East while our own government admits it has no real evacuation plan, and several of the very countries we’re telling people to flee don’t even have a U.S. ambassador on the ground to coordinate it.
Noem’s response is outlandish and should alarm everyone. Even if you take her “probable cause” claim at face value, it would not justify warrantless entries into homes, and it certainly would not justify continuing to detain someone after they’ve produced proof of citizenship.
This authoritarian regime, emboldened by unbounded power and zero accountability, deals out “unimaginable cruelty,” even a Trump-appointed judge blasts. Targeting innocents just because they can.

DHS has “systematically obstructed” the Inspector General, including in a national security criminal probe. This is a direct attack on the rule of law and on independent oversight at DHS.

Steady State Brief: Respect for Service Members
We must support the service members and intelligence professionals carrying out their duties in war while holding the President and Congress accountable for whether the decision to go to war is lawful, constitutional, and ethically justified.
"We mourn the deaths of our service people...We mourn the deaths of innocent people of any nationality. And it is incumbent on us all to continually question and analyze the rationale, decision-making and the consequences of both that result in these tragic losses."

If we are fortunate enough to succeed in preserving our democracy, we must institutionalize through our education system the crucial lesson of citizen-engaged participation in countering the constant threats to our precious Constitution-based civic and political culture.

Every time Trump sidelines NATO, brushes off European leaders, or launches unilateral strikes that even allies question, he makes it harder to build the coalitions we’ll need for real security against terrorism, cyberattacks, or an aggressive Russia and China.

“These are the times that try men’s souls,” Paine also wrote. Today, we should replace ‘men’s’ with ‘people’s’, but the message is just as apt today as it was in 1775. As tiring as it might be, we must make the effort. “

This is what democracy looks like. The system, battered and straining, works. Checks and balances functioning. And autocrats, at least here, in full retreat. #holdfast
