Join us next week as we spotlight another remarkable woman whose discoveries continue to shape science and society. 👩‍🔬👩🏾‍🔬

Hodgkin’s legacy is reflected not only in the immediate scientific applications of her research & discoveries, expanding the limits of X-ray crystallography, but also in a deep commitment to science as a global endeavor that can bring people together.

Beyond her scientific achievements, Hodgkin was a lifelong advocate for world peace. She campaigned against nuclear weapons & believed in international scientific cooperation, including with Chinese & Soviet scientists during the Cold War.

Through groundbreaking applications of X-ray #crystallography, she mapped the structures of penicillin, vitamin B12, & insulin. These discoveries helped scientists better understand & manufacture life-saving substances & established crystallography as an indispensable tool in modern science.

Dorothy Hodgkin (1910–1994) was a British chemist awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1964 “for her determinations by X-ray techniques of the structures of important biochemical substances.”

We kicked off the week with an Impromptu Seminar by @boccellato.bsky.social (@ludwigcancer.bsky.social) on “mucosoids”, human stem-cell-based in-vitro equivalent of a mucosa to study epithelial homeostasis & responses to bacterial infections. Rosalind Franklin’s legacy is defined by her lasting impact. Today, we recognize her essential role in shaping modern molecular biology & inspiring future generations of scientists. ⭐

Her work was foundational to discoveries that resulted in two Nobel Prizes 🏅, yet she did not receive or witness either of them.

Earlier in her career, she studied the physical chemistry of carbon & coal for the war effort, which led to important insights into the structure of graphite.

Her X-ray diffraction data, including the image of B DNA taken together with Raymond Gosling (known as Photograph 51), provided critical evidence for revealing the double-helix structure of DNA. 🧬

𝗥𝗼𝘀𝗮𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗱 𝗙𝗿𝗮𝗻𝗸𝗹𝗶𝗻 (1920–1958) was a British chemist & X-ray crystallographer who made key contributions to deciphering the molecular structures of DNA, RNA, & viruses. 🧬

Despite never obtaining a formal PhD, Elion's legacy is extraordinary. She helped develop (among others) acyclovir, the first successful antiviral drug, & azidothymidine, the first drug used to treat AIDS.

𝗚𝗲𝗿𝘁𝗿𝘂𝗱𝗲 𝗕. 𝗘𝗹𝗶𝗼𝗻, chosen by Stefan Kubicek's group, was an American pharmacologist who, along with George H. Hitchings & Sir James Black, won the 1988 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine "for their discoveries of important principles for drug treatment."
