His telling us what it all means, as in all his books, comes off to me as ruining a really good book.

I can’t remember anything in the book about Daniel Dennett, his “hard problem”, or his now dismissed solution to the hard problem of consciousness. It is all about science not philosophy.

I am gathering you haven’t read A World Appears. It is mainly about cutting edge research done by others. There is an emphasis on whether plants are conscious, and other similar way out there ideas. And a lot of Pollan telling us what it all means. As in all his books the science is fascinating. #1

I am not a philosopher of consciousness. I knew Daniel. I quite liked him. He was great fun to argue with and he made me a better thinker by challenging my beliefs. But humble he was not.

I only know Pollan’s books. His Botany of Desire is the only one I found enriched my thinking.

The irony of quoting Daniel Dennett’s work while criticizing Michael Pollan’s is delicious. Daniel was famous for his absurd self-confidence. The vast majority of philosophers no longer take Dennett seriously and neuroscientists ignore his work. In other words his self-confidence was ill founded.
