Actually had a terrific discussion of this book in my East Asian History survey class yesterday while events were still unfolding. The timing was impeccable (the book works well even without an attempted coup for emphasis). Thanks @ryanestrada.com
It is clear that my students, curious students- instead of reading for pleasure or reading about something that interests them go on YouTube and watch video. If you only read when you have to reading becomes about pulling the right answers from a text

Yes, she is evading a central issue. The palace/secret memorial system was created to resolve the the problem of the throne being flooded with routine communications. So considering whether or not it worked is central to the argument sheβs trying to make.
