Glad you appreciated it! I thought that shot of the wind rustling the pages was a very clear reference to John XXIII's words about "opening the windows of the church."

Could the plot twist in โ€œConclaveโ€ actually happen? Jesuitical ยท Episode

To be clear, I don't think the pope is meaning to send a negative message about the Notre Dame reopening, and Paris vs. Corsica wasn't necessarily a binary choice.

But I think his opting for Corsica reveals how he prioritizes uplifting both migrants and down-home Catholicism. (4/4)

03.12.2024 13:08 ๐Ÿ‘ 5 ๐Ÿ” 0 ๐Ÿ’ฌ 0 ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

Then there's the popular piety aspect.

Francis is going to Corsica for a conference on Popular Religion in the Mediterranean; Corsica is known for its deep religiosity.

While Notre Dame is also a place of devotion, I think it's safe to say that more people go there for tourism than prayer. (3/4)

03.12.2024 13:08 ๐Ÿ‘ 2 ๐Ÿ” 0 ๐Ÿ’ฌ 1 ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

Every time the pope has visited France, he's spoken about migration. And opting for Corsica adds to a long list of visits to Mediterranean islands he's visited where he's highlighted migration, so I would be surprised if he didn't do the same this time. (2/3)

03.12.2024 13:08 ๐Ÿ‘ 2 ๐Ÿ” 0 ๐Ÿ’ฌ 1 ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

I've been asked a few times whether Pope Francis skipped the Notre Dame reopening bc of the Olympic opening ceremony brouhaha.

I can't say for certain if his Dec. 15 visit to Corsica, also in France, was the reason he said no, but the choice to go to Corsica over Paris this month is telling. (1/4)

The Pope, Transgender People, and Little Sisters of Jesus: How It Came to Happen The pope is visited by transgender people at his general audiences. He has gone to a permanent carnival park to visit the Little Sisters of Jesus who bring these trans people to him. And he chats wโ€ฆ

Understanding how trans people ended up going to Pope Francisโ€™ audiences, and meeting with him, requires a pretty solid understanding of his relationship with the spiritual family of Charles de Foucauld. Last year, I reconstructed that untold story for you:

How realistic is โ€˜Conclave,โ€™ the movie that lifts the lid on how a pope is elected? | CNN This has been a blockbuster election year politically, so itโ€™s fitting that a new movie shines a light on an ancient and highly secretive voting process: the selection of a new pope.

How realistic is โ€˜Conclave,โ€™ the movie?

It tries to showcase the battle for the soul of the church that takes place during a papal election & examines the tension between the demands of faith and the desire for high office.
