Like some of ya'll, I'll be at GDC from Monday evening - Friday morning. I'll be strollin' around Yerba Buena Gardens and the Expo floor demoing Soul Food and giving out stickers.
I've got a calendar that's fillin' up with events, mixers, and meetings - but I'll always make time for friends!
I *just* finished this in January and I loved it. It starts off a little dry, but once the cosmic-horror stuff starts hitting it absolutely takes off. I'll be thinking about several of the scenes for a very long time. Such a satisfying ending too, imo.
Okay how many of you dorks are going to GDC and when are we gonna hang out? @llanier.bsky.social and I have stickers to handout and a demo for you to play. ๐ค
Yooo, sticker trade?? @llanier.bsky.social and I will have Soul Food stickers! ๐
I very genuinely lol'd ๐
This guy would go so hard as a secret final boss in a fighting game.
I think this is also the reason why I was always "bad" at social media. I just don't have it in me anymore to be 'terminally online' and create/manage an online presence. Which is counter-intuitive to trying to start a business, but idk, if the content I make is good - it'll find it's audience.
the chromatic aberration in this photo is so juicy.
The feeling you get when you finally remove the last use case of the Unreal Engine mannequins is a profound one. You've been real good to me, Manny & Quinn.
Close up of a Japanese frittata, called okonomiyaki. It's missing bonito and pork belly, but for lunch it was great as is.
I tried my hand at making okonomiyaki for lunch today. ๐๐ผโจ Not perfect, but it was delicious all the same.

Doing some more work with Basic Cable Games on their chef character
I'm excited to get to this point because I'm FINALLY working on the stylized shading for this, and I can already see a ton of ways to improve and push it towards looking like their concept art
Love to see it! Also I could not for the life of me remember who inspired my own object-stable UVs and it WAS JAN. ๐ Time is a circle.

I haven't tested this yet, but it looks close to something I had done before for a different project.
It's Halloween. Here's some WIP violence. ๐๐ช Soul Food will have Doom-style "glory kills" during combat.
Well.. I certainly won't forget *now* thanks
To be clear, I do not fuck with 95% of GenAI for all the reasons most artists don't. But saying there's *no* place for it seems misguided. The day there's a good AI driven UV tool, mocap cleanup tool, or anything that removes the tedium from making 3D art and animations.. I'm interested.
I'll probably get burned at the stake for saying this - but I think that what is shown in their blog is a pretty acceptable use for GenAI. It's a slippery-slope for sure, and IDK how they're using it now, but this doesn't really raise an ethics-red-flag for me.
My understanding is that they use the scan to inform a blockout made in blender. Then do some mark-up for a different tool that uses the scan to inform additional details that are generated in painter.
I'm sure it has evolved in the last five years.
Not out here to try and necessarily defend Embark here, but if you're curious - here's the tech blog they put out in 2020 referencing their internal "scan from video tool"

We're switching to lightmaps
A 3D character in Zbrush with a hair bun, a hachimaki, pan-Asian facial features, a heavy apron, a t-shirt, chef pants, and clogs
Working on a blockout of the main character for Basic Cable Games on their upcoming izakaya-chef-battling-monsters game, Soul Food!
I knew the pants especially were going to present some sculpting difficulties, so I used a @render-ready.com scan of real chef pants as my starting point
Now that I'm actively working on a dual-wielding combat system.. I now understand why it's so rarely done anymore.
Good lord.
this is also incredible brick walking path material reference
The way I cackled was alarming
this looks like the kind of stuff you find in the weird food section of Homegoods
truly pun-derful
Get in the poly-soup workflow.
Damn, idk why I didn't expect you to pick up Dune but I'm glad you did. Their biome artists all nailed it.
