This applies to virtually any career path I think. You learn a lot stepping outside your comfort zone. Actually that truth applies to just about all facets of life come to think of it...

Yep, and in fact every vehicle with electronic door latches - which include many vehicles from traditional manufacturers - have exactly this mechanism for exactly the same reason.

"have to" is pretty strong. Did you have a conversation with them? Maybe they are ok with you being pants-less? It sounds like you are making assumptions about their pants habits and expectations. Open and honest communication is the key to a good pants-relationship.
