"U.S. military investigators believe it is likely that U.S. forces were responsible for an apparent strike on an Iranian girls' school."
"The strike would rank among the worst cases of civilian casualties in decades of U.S. conflicts in the βMiddle East."
I'm glad I'm not alone in this

I didnβt think it was possible for anything to make me feel bad for Ian Miles Cheongβ¦ but this picture makes me feel a bit bad for Ian Miles Cheong. I think I might rather die than have a picture of me like this circulate

"As filmmakers, we're not saving lives. But I think we are giving people a reason to live": I'm grateful to everyone from Canada's Iranian filmmaking diaspora who spoke with me about how their community is reckoning with the war. www.theglobeandmail.com/culture/film...
The opposite? Maybe not the opposite. I just mean that you see everyone at the hospital.
Airports = a skewed slice of the populace filtered by income because flights cost money --> you're more likely to see people with a higher income.
Hospitals = the opposite.

I recognize how naive this can sound, how disconnected from the impossibly dense economic, legal and social networks that constitute our reality. It sounds like a glib observation. Maybe it is. But I canβt shake the sense that there must be a better way than this.
I live in a condo in a large city and a little ways down the other side of the street, across from a too-expensive grocery store, is a shelter. Every single day, I look out of the window and see cars worth 100k, 200k, sometimes 400k, drive past the shelter. There has to be a better way than this.

Writers of Bsky: Scratch is back! This time as a weekly newsletter/blog about how writers are surviving ~these times~, run by me, @manjula.bsky.social, @maggiemertens.bsky.social, and @latriagraham.bsky.social. You can read more about why/what that means in our announcement post below.
If you're a grassroots community advocate and need some inspiration that good things can come from your work, it's worth reading Dan's op-ed here and then reading the article he posted, below, to see how an advocacy journey like his can have tangible results. Hopecore urbanism, as it were.
important reminder!
Something to that effect. I'm not saying it makes sense or is true
the ppl I know from London who go there go, I think, bc of the proximity to wealth, or as a way to signify wealth/success? i.e. someone like me can afford to go to Cancun, but I can't afford to stay at a swanky hotel in Dubai
Related: a family member told me she felt the West is in decline after she went to a 3rd wave coffee shop in Vancouver's lower east side. The middle east, she told me, is a sign that other places are doing far better
i don't feel particularly confused by it? many people seem to specifically want the hyperreal vacation spot. what is an all-inclusive resort if not "unreal"? that's the reason people go
Huh
