To me, the mechanics of “what would you have them do” is that they could have surrendered the warship to India and been interned for the duration of the conflict.

This is probably just a requirement. Cyprus isn’t a hazard post, so State Department employees can’t normally refuse postings there and don’t get hazard pay.

I doubt the missile ignited itself… the accident was the wingman pushing the button to launch it.
To launch an AIM-9 off the rail and have it track you have to have powered it on and warm it up, then press the button to ignite the motor once it tracks. Very hard to have a system failure do that.
