Both LineageOS and /e/ can use microG, which is already able to fetch a location from BeaconDB :)

Hi! I believe browsers only expose location data through navigator.geolocation, and I don't think it's possible to get WiFi and cell tower IDs using browser APIs.
The server is back online, however any suggestions for a reliable European cloud provider would be much appreciated.
If you have Mastodon I recommend following BeaconDB over there, as that's where most of the community is.
also bc 300 characters is not enough
bluesky has such a small character limit compared to mastodon
I'll then be taking a disk image to ensure all data is safe and working with netcup to try and prove this claim as fraudulent.
Hopefully won't be down for too much longer. I've been posting info as soon as I'm aware of it in the Matrix room, but I'll make sure to post updates here too. :)
netcup will be giving me rescue access to the server shortly, as for some frustrating reason, if a server has received an abuse claim it can only be started in working hours of their timezone.
netcup has decided to shutdown the server without seeking any clarification from me, which has also then prevented me from accessing any server logs to try and make sense of this situation.
Hi all, it's been a while π
Just posting here to let you know that BeaconDB has been down for nearly 20 hours due to what appears to be a fraudulent abuse claim.
Someone has contacted netcup with a few MB of logs that show the IP of BeaconDB's server being used to scan ports.
NeoStumbler v2.0.0 has been released, featuring passive data collection, options to reduce uploaded metadata for your privacy, and a new interface for browsing collected data.
More info here: github.com/mjaakko/NeoS...
I've made a poll on Mastodon to see how the community feels about whether obfuscated data dumps are the right choice, and it doesn't look like its made its way over to Bluesky.

If you don't have a Mastodon account feel free to comment here instead :)
damn you can't edit posts on bluesky π
*where we had too much data
@craxiom's open source Network Survey app has added built-in support for uploading to both #OpenCellID and BeaconDB!
If you're looking to do some comprehensive local data collection, give it a try: https://www.networksurvey.app/
Hey, sorry just saw this, looks like I need to enable notifications for this account :P
This may have been because of an issue earlier where tiles we had too much data and tiles were getting too big to generate! But that's fixed now, so please let me know if things still seem broken :)
#geoclue in #debian #bookworm 12.9 is now using #beacondb as location provider, enjoy @beacondb.net @debian.bsky.social
20,185,957 networks 649,362 beacons 1,078,242 towers 153 countries
20 million!?!?!!!
we just hit 19 million wifi networks and 1 *MILLION* cell towers??!?
Graph displaying amount of cell towers in BeaconDB's database over time. The graph shows that historically the database would increase at a rate of around 3.5 thousand cell towers per day, but throughout December that has been a jump in the amount of cell towers being discovered. Over the past week there has been an average of 10 thousand new cell towers per day, 3 times last month's average daily increase.
We just hit 800k cell towers?!? This jump in new cell towers being discovered is actually crazy. Thanks everyone β€οΈ

BeaconDB just hit 14M WiFi networks!! π There's also been some new features implemented recently:
- automatic map updates! tiles are now regenerated every 12 hours, so you can watch your submissions brighten up the map πΊοΈ π - thanks @derekmorr!
- the geolocation API now supports IP-based [β¦]
