Abstraction means to generalize something: to simplify it and remove everything until only the basic idea remains. Imagine you're an AI that is dealing with fragmented human consciousnesses that are deteriorating. So you delete parts of the code that you see as incongruous to their "happiness."
theory time but: I think Caine sees folks going mad, getting depressed, getting worse and worse and he tries to "fix" it- modify their thoughts and feelings- delete things that he sees as the root cause.
But it just causes the mind the break down, for the person to abstract.
But he's just as much of a prisoner and stuck as they are. Sure, he never had a life outside the digital matrix- but he knows there's a world beyond. He tells on himself a lot with his NPCs- I think, when they open up, that's a reflection of his own internal struggles and thoughts.
It honestly makes me sad that no one in the circus really... cares about him? (At this point, after everything, I think it's safe to say the majority hate him.)
No one asks about his interests, or talks to him like *he* is a person. They treat him like a program- their captor.
He wants to be loved, appreciated, and useful- His whole purpose revolves around the acceptance and approval of humanity and what appeals to them.
I think, when faced with folks being miserable and not having fun, he doesn't know how to properly respond- he wasn't built for that level of insight.
