there's a thing I like to call "load-bearing assumptions", that you don't notice until they're suddenly gone (e.g the air you breath has oxygen in it).

the post-ww2 order is a load-bearing assumption for basically the entirety of american life. trump took a sledgehammer to it in the last 90 days.

Republicans love to take an economy that Democrats built and then use it to get back at their perceived enemies at home and abroad. Then, after it all comes crashing down, they attack the very Dems who are working to pick up the pieces and rebuild.

The American political class is utterly delusional, adrift in a dream of normality, unable to process the actual reality of events on the ground, where the US just launched a completely unprovoked war against a massive country, murdered its leadership, and demanded its conversion to a vassal state.

As Bike Cars Overflow, Caltrain Bans Large Bikes and Panniers - Streetsblog San Francisco New rules heavily restrict the types of bikes Caltrain users can bring on board. Years ago advocates warned Caltrain that they weren't allotting enough bike space on the new trains

This need to be called out at perpetuating sexist policies that privilege bikers without child carrying, errand running responsibilities. Caltrain would never consider banning kids from trains, why is it ok to make it impossible for parents who travel bike to use the system?

The Biden economy was good, and anyone who refused to vote for Harris is responsible for this outcome.

I hope the millionaire's tax passes, and I hope it actually brings in money for public schools. I wouldn't be surprised to see it fall apart at the finish line, or be rejected by voters. If that happens, it'll be due to Democratic legislators' hostility to public education.

06.03.2026 15:29 πŸ‘ 2 πŸ” 0 πŸ’¬ 0 πŸ“Œ 0

That in turn has enabled austerity mongers and those who oppose public services to try and block a millionaire's tax from funding good things. Now a small handful of corporate Dems hold the tax's fate in their hands, and Dems who back the tax aren't able to mobilize the public to pressure them.

06.03.2026 15:29 πŸ‘ 1 πŸ” 0 πŸ’¬ 1 πŸ“Œ 0

Democratic legislators are bombarded with requests for more money for good and important things. They also, as a whole, simply do not care about public schools. The combination meant Dems refused to dedicate much of the millionaire's tax revenue for schools, which meant it was up for grabs.

These are the WA Democrats who can, and must, shape income tax | Editorial A small number of House Democrats will decide whether the tax passes this year. They should demand real tax relief for their constituents.

This whole editorial is a reflection of the disastrous decision by Dem leaders in #waleg to ignore advice and not link a millionaire's tax to public education. As a result, the new revenue is going to get whittled away in negotiations while schools and other services starve.

Agreed. But that requires a change to the state constitution and only the legislature can initiate that. Which for some reason they’ve not been willing to do.

I do not understand why WA House Dems allow this nonsense. Limit the number of amendments to 4 or 5. Limit the speaking time. When you have absurdly short sessions (60 days in even years) you can’t afford to enable timewasting like this.

"This is what the jackboots actually look like, people. We have seen the enemy, and it's right here at home."

This was a meeting about a mild transportation project to decrease speeding, improve lighting, and make an accessible barrier protected trail.

Or a totalitarian invasion? Hard to know.

Urbanist Ron Davis Hungers for the House Davis has heard grumblings about his decision to run against an established Democrat incumbent, but he thinks he's the right choice for the seat.

Gerry Pollet "has long advocated for increasing density in Seattle and the 46th district" like I've long advocated for the Dodgers to beat the Giants.

In fact, Pollet has been a notable NIMBY, voting against key housing bills and even being stripped of a key committee chair by his colleagues.

Western civilization is principally the product of:
1) Ancient Greek philosophy and culture
2) Ancient Roman law and infrastructure
3) Enlightenment philosophy

And *distantly* 4) "Christian" teachings mostly as a thin overlay to justify oppression of women and obedience to lords and kings.

Unfunded inclusionary zoning mandates are de-facto taxes on new housing that worsen the housing shortage because they require homebuilders to rent or sell a percentage of their new homes at a loss.

Funded inclusionary zoning, on the other hand, is a great tool to economically integrate new housing.

The thinking was that it would moderate the Dem caucuses in the Assembly and Senate because Republican voters would crossover and pick the more moderate Dem in November. Which does sometimes happen. Just not nearly as much as Arnold thought it would.

Perry: This St. Patrick’s Day, don’t forget Irish music’s anti-fascist roots Dropkick Murphys, the iconic Irish American punk band, are headlining a free block party March 6 near where Alex Pretti was killed by immigration agents, contributing columnist David M. Perry writes.

NEW β€œWe’re celebrating a tradition that is at its core about resisting occupation and maintaining community in the face of horrors. You can’t keep politics out of Irish music. No one should try, for two reasons. First, it’s ahistorical. Second, Minnesotans are ready for a big anti-fascist party.”
