Moneylenders is an antisemitic medieval gloss on the text. We know there were moneychangers in the Temple because there are other sources that document it. We also know why the moneychangers were there - to facilitate the tithing called for in Deuteronomy 14:22-26. Currency exchange is not lending.

We've discussed this. In Matthew 21:12-13, there is a passage about Jesus being angered by moneychangers in the Temple. Because the legal tender was the Tyrian shekel, they needed changers. Later editions changed it to "moneylenders," because it furthered the blood libel. See Amy-Jill Levine.
