Best historical reimagining - Rosemary Sutcliff, Sword at Sunset, but read her Lantern Bearers first. She also did a three-book Malory retelling, available as the King Arthur Trilogy, but otherwise Sword and the Circle, Light Beyond the Forest, Road to Camlann.
