One of my strongest memories was finding out that someone named a library after a Roland TB-303 synth. And look at it - started almost 20 years ago, with the parent company having been renamed "meta" to align with a market that ended up to be a bubble, fb303 is still a thing - I fucking love it!

Oh wow, fb303 is still alive?
In 2012 I moved from Kyiv to Dublin for my first proper tech job and had to quickly figure out the western way of thinking about computers - the "distributed systems" scene, "RPC" being a thing even though nobody used the term "procedure" for at least a couple decades.

Two years of people shouting that "AI" will make programming obsolete, but an LLM still struggles with upgrading dependencies of a React Native project?
Like a peasant I still have to manually suffer through this JS DLL hell every 2 years to meet Play Store upgrade treadmill requirements.

Complains about scraping sound like folks want to get the benefits of free distribution on the internet (“traffic”, as SEO people say), but don’t want to pay the price (actually making your stuff public).

My hot take is that it’s easier to treat this as a binary decision: either put something on the internet and let people fetch it, or just leave it private - use Tailscale, an .htaccess file, or a Discord server.

But internet keeps growing, and in 2025 more and more people started (poorly) running web crawlers. Regrettably, this seems to be pushing the idea of “scraping” as something bad to spread to some tech communities that have traditionally been supportive of the open internet.

We owe the concept of “scraping” to the big walled-garden tech companies (ebay, facebook) seeking to restrict others from accessing their websites. By its nature, I think it is antithetical to the idea of the open web.

The worst job in the world right now is the Spring Forward Sunday shift at an American car rental company because you need to go through all the cars and adjust the dashboard clock by one hour.

The best job in the world right now is the night security shift in FLV because you can see 11 rooms full of Rothko alone.

I am at the end of my week-long vacation and I still find myself unreasonably annoyed when people refer to Go as “Golang”. Should I take more time off, or is there a better solution?
