We remember the past to illuminate the dangers of the present, and to reaffirm our collective commitment to human dignity, equality, and justice for all.

It is a call to action for the present.
The lesson of "Never Again" is a lesson of active vigilance. It demands that we stand together, speak out against the dehumanization of any group, and protect the vulnerable.
Today, as we see the rising tides of authoritarianism, xenophobia, and targeted persecution around the worldโand as we witness the devastating impacts of invasive policies on immigrants and marginalized communities in our own nationโthe imperative of remembrance is not only about the past.
We recall the specific persecution of LGBTQ+ individuals under Paragraph 175. After the war, their suffering was ignored; they were denied reparations and many were re-imprisoned. Their fight for recognition teaches us that justice delayed is justice denied, and that remembrance must be inclusive.
We remember that the Holocaust did not begin with camps, but with words: with normalized hatred, with dehumanizing laws, and with the steady erosion of rights for targeted groups. It was enabled by indifference, by a failure to recognize gathering tyranny, and by the division of society.

On International Holocaust Remembrance Day, we honor the six million Jewish lives systematically murdered by the Nazi regime, and all the victims of its ideology, including Roma, disabled individuals, political dissidents, and LGBTQ+ people.
We honor Dr. King today by refusing to be silent. We honor him by loving our neighbors fiercely, protesting peacefully, and standing firm until liberty and justice are not conditional, selective, or delayedโbut real for everyone.

In 2026, as hard-won rights face renewed threats, his guidance remains clear. We are called to create that constructive, nonviolent tensionโnot out of hatred, but out of love and moral urgency.
The Roadmap He Left Us
Dr. King did not ask us to wait patiently for justice. He taught that โNonviolent direct action seeks to create such a crisis and foster such a tension that a community which has constantly refused to negotiate is forced to confront the issue.โ
When policies target immigrants, erase transgender people, or criminalize identity, they are not attacking โothers.โ They are attacking our neighbors, our loved ones, and our community itself. You cannot unravel one thread without weakening the whole garment.
Our community includes immigrants and asylum seekers. It includes Black and Brown leaders demanding equity. It includes workers fighting for economic survival and families striving to live safely and openly.
The LGBTQ+ community reflects this mutuality in lived, everyday ways. We are not a demographic island; we are a human cross-sectionโborn into every family, every faith, every race, and every nation.
In 2026, we return to these words not just for inspiration, but for instructionโrooted in the Black freedom struggle and offered to all movements committed to human dignity.
Dr. King taught us that there is no such thing as an โoutsiderโ in the fight for justice.
He wrote:
โInjustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere. We are caught in an inescapable network of mutuality, tied in a single garment of destiny. Whatever affects one directly, affects all indirectly.โ
An artistic rendering of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., looking forward with a solemn and hopeful expression. Text overlaid on the image reads: 'TIED IN A SINGLE GARMENT OF DESTINY. WHATEVER AFFECTS ONE DIRECTLY, AFFECTS ALL INDIRECTLY. โ DR. MARTIN LUTHER KING JR.' The background features subtle colors of the Yakima Pride brand colors blended with warm, sunrise tones.
On April 16, 1963, writing from the confines of a jail cell, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. responded to critics who called his actions โunwise and untimely.โ He did not offer an apology; he offered a lesson on the mechanics of justice.

Enough is enough: ICE agents do not belong in our communities.
We're taking to the streets this weekend in protest of ICE โ join us.
