Another little change a long time coming, now you can actually see which areas you haven't been to in rooms you've visited prior

While we've been overhauling a lot of the display backend code, we're also toying around with having rooms that don't have to fit the entire entire screen

For tiny little connecting rooms like this, it always felt a bit silly having to stretch them all the way out to 16:9

Tried upgrading the color bleed filter to have a bit more of a glow to it

Now that there's an integer scale setting, I can also add a scanlines setting without it looking awful in fullscreen 'v'

Both of these address a little insecurity we've had with the level design where vertical movement often feels so much more constrained.

This isn't a magic bullet, but it's nice having that extra breathing room.

We've also been experimenting on a 16:10 mode made with Steam Deck in mind!

The status bar was just tall enough to get away with this, and many of the cutscenes were already letterboxed, so it works pretty well!

Experimenting with a different status bar style.

All the rooms in the game already had a 32 pixel buffer for the old one to sit over, so I figured it'd be nice having this new one let you see what's behind it now.

My only real gripe is that I kinda miss lives? It's a very arcadey game otherwise, but it can feel tiring grinding away at a single checkpoint without that break in the pacing.

I guess that and the few bosses I fought can be kind of drawn out, waiting for cycles to end. Not too bad, tho.

I like it! I love that it still has the fixed jump arc, and I love how the levels feel so unstable that you're constantly on the edge of your seat as enemies fly all over the place and the environment shifts around you.

Insane that a large company greenlit this in the current decade (positive)

It's not the nostalgia itself that annoys me, it's treating static HTML as a thing from a long bygone era, when it's really just the fundamentals that most sites that are built off of.

But since everyone's stuck on the same 5 sites now, it's treated as a retro internet thing when it never went away
