GOOD NEWS. The vinyl and the CDs of ‘This Could be Us, You, Or Anybody Else’ have arrived and they look absolutely gorgeous. Also, it is Bandcamp Friday, and therefore the perfect time to preorder one of these now tangible beauties. So, please do that. xox

Today I want to talk about Jess’ Rule and Martha’s Rule, two new initiatives across NHS England that I think are really important and you should know about.
Tl;dr: if your symptoms are not improving or getting worse, at home or in hospital, you have the right and Drs the responsibility to review.

Sad news. I’d seen JB’s post on Instagram, but didn’t want to repost it. Better to still have Justin around, well, and producing music, but put Godflesh to bed. He has so many other great projects. A hero of mine for years now. A king of extreme and experimental music. Recuperate and be well, sir! 🫡

So this post broke containment and lost a little of the context when it did but Bikini Kill are the ones donating to TCP, not Bandcamp. We generally choose a different org or mutual aid fund to support on Bandcamp Fridays and this is what we chose this month.

- AI training isn’t ‘learning’ and shouldn’t be treated as such

The House of Lords has been absolutely consistent on this, and they are totally right. Will the government listen?

They destroy the argument that big tech should be given the country’s creative output for free, and they lay out the case for maintaining and even strengthening existing copyright law to protect creatives from exploitation.

Check out this amazing project to bring mental health support to children in Gaza!

Think about the children in your life, and what you would want for them if they'd just been through an unimaginable trauma.

Can't really unlearn what we've learned about autistic women's experiences just because it's categorically untidy and politically inconvenient

This thing where something we care about (and once had more influence over) has moved and morphed beyond our control and so we rail about how ruined it is - it's such a common thing to see people doing this. In culture and sport, we see it for what it is. In science and politics, not so much?

Yes, that really jumped out as a tell. Couple of paragraphs later all of the counter claims about what clinicians are doing wrong are based on vibes ('I get a sense ...' and 'I fear ..'). Not much science going on there ..

I think that every mention of this war should begin with the fact that we intentionally targeted 160 little girls to die at school. Like I am simply never going to get over this. It’s how we started this war. That’s never gonna fade away.

🆕 How do #NHS staff earnings compare to 15 years ago?

Our analysis finds that real terms pay for most NHS staff has recovered slower than the public sector average. Pay recovery to 2010 levels for #nurses and #midwives in particular is still out of reach.

I’ve written about this excellent piece before in my own take on Labour’s “midlife crisis“ but this really was the warning sign from almost six months ago that the data was saying something very different from Number 10’s rhetoric.

this article is shocking. there is no "automatic, permanent right to remain" for refugees. they have to apply! and if they move to a work visa, they'd still have to apply. time spent as a student doesn't count toward the 5 year default path to ILR www.gov.uk/settlement-r... cc @katyguest.bsky.social

also someone should ask the home secretary about people "arriving without clear paths to skilled work". if you don't come on a work visa, you come on a very specific *other* kind of visa. is she complaining about students? spouses? it can't be the post study visa, because that's done in-country

Of course it's also odd given that speech to see how much more insecure Labour have made us since that speech with the contracts handed to Palantir in critical state functions in the NHS and MoD.

Sovereignty for sale Tech monopolies and the future of the nation state

Much to my surprise, I have also become a tech sovereigntist. Tech fundamental to public and security systems should be under our control (sometimes in cooperation with similar countries- not US).

The current sovereign AI strategy is shockingly weak.

Just when I thought I couldn't despair of UKRI any more. This is no way to run a call, let alone one with funding of this magnitude.
