the writing in this essay really transported me back to the game -- the flow, the depiction, it's like I'm back on that journey again
Phoenix Springs is such a visually distinct game, this piece really evoked the imagery, it's such a good read (esp as someone who played the game and was v confused)

Saddened to announce I was affected by the recent Polygon layoffs. Though my time there was short, it was an incredible experience with a truly lovely bunch of people.

Scion by Thomas Ha
Clarkesworld Science Fiction and Fantasy Magazine and Podcast.
Hey there. Latest story, now out, "Scion." Strangeness. Estrangement. And the history that gets lost in between. A son and father in a moving house. Deranged relatives at cross-purposes. A community fleeing a murderous intruder. A crumbling lunar colony in revolt. Hope folks enjoy. Twisty one.

There's so much to learn from Zelda, even 40 years later
Zelda's ability to endure over decades is a miracle
Wrote some words for Zeldaโs 40th anniversary about games as folk tales, and why Zelda can endure for so long while other long/running series so often end up tying themselves up in narrative knots. Always love thinking about games as foundations. www.polygon.com/zelda-40th-a...

Reminder to other indie dev teams especially new teams. Most of us are happy to share advice and give feedback on publisher/funding/platform deals and terms. There are some shady predatory biz weasels that will take advantage of you as soon as your game starts to pop off. Please reach out.

From 2008-2018 the video games industry existed for financial interests to incubate what they wanted to become the new economy. Gambling on everything, addiction by design, mediated social spaces, even massive GPU production. They don't need games anymore so they left games behind, wounded.

Hey! I'm Julie! Writer, consultant, designer. If you need a writer for a project, or a consultant to take a look at a game, I am open for contract work! Let me know. I've worked on titles like Silent Hill 2 Remake, Signalis, and 1000xResist, and I made one of Paste's favorite games of 2024.

Giovanni puts forth a beautiful idea here: what if our childhood games were remade for a new generation of kids to enjoy, rather than being remade for the cohort of adults who initially grew up with them? I love this idea. Passing stories down rather than holding onto them so tightly

G O M B E R T, by Nicolas Gombert & James Weeks
14 track album
It's Bandcamp Friday! Here's my rec: a collection of works by Renaissance composer Nicolas Gombert performed by the inimitable Apartment House.
It's some of the most exquisitely elegant, achingly sad music I've ever heard. 10/10, no notes.

Bruno Dias is a game designer and writer. Previous credits include Where the Water Tastes Like Wine, Neo Cab, and Pathologic 2.
I'm still looking for full-time or contract work โ I'm a narrative design generalist with credits on multiple shipped titles. I focus on taming the complexity of narrative systems, writing prose, and leading narrative teams.

I may delete this because itโs a bit spicy but it shouldnโt be lost on us that games being turned into TV is essentially harvesting the stories written by those who donโt have union representation or healthcare with WGA by those that do. Our stories are good enough for TV but the writers arenโt?

I recognise the irony of me saying this while playing the remaster but Shadow of the Colossus really is one of the few sincerely timeless games. I reckon it could be designed exactly as is and have come out in any year in the last two decades and it would still become an instant classic.

RE that RT.. itโs wild how steam reviews are still so damn important to getting visibility. If you play and like indie games, the most generous and helpful thing you can do is spend an hour popping positive reviews onto anything you like with <500 or so reviews.
