Despite the years I have spent digging into the nuance and complexity that is the UI system, you may not realize that I am also somehow Master of the Spin. For reference, here is the exchange: www.youtube.com/live/MnaVSCi...
@micheleevermore
I care about worker rights and our safety nets, especially unemployment insurance. I've worked for unions, think tanks, universities, a couple of presidential administrations, and Congress. Views my own.

Thank you! That's such better functionality. I need to spend more time on here.
UI fraud has been a real problem that states are spending a great deal of time and resources combatting. This administration is being counterproductive by politicizing it. Excellent story link in replies.
Here is my collaboration with Will Raderman @niskanencenter.bsky.social to look into states that have adopted enhanced wage records and how that data can help UI agencies, as well as training and education efforts for workers. www.niskanencenter.org/the-case-for...
When this is all over, I propose we establish a fund to pay damages to those illegally harmed by ICE, funded by assets seized from those responsible, and if they are no longer alive, their estates. Similar to what we did for Japanese American internees, but not 50 years later.
Arrests, detentions, and deportations will devastate home care, eliminating jobs and the care infrastructure that seniors, people with disabilities, and families depend on
Today at 34 & Park in Minneapolis, a woman tried to drive down the street where a protest had broken out in front of a home ICE was raiding, saying she had a doctor apt to get to. ICE agents busted out her windows, cut off her seatbelt, and pulled her out before arresting her.
What in the Gestapo is going on in Grand Rapids?
Watch this activist get arrested *mid-interview* for speaking out against U.S. action in Venezuela.
It's great that Senators Warren and Sanders are on top of this!
a graph of the unemployment rate by race/ethnicity
The unemployment rate for Black Americans rose to 8.3% in November, the highest level since 2021 and a 2.1 percentage point increase from the start of this year
Bidenomics were good, actually?
I wonder how DOGE feels not getting paid right now.
Exactly! Thanks for amplifying this, Waldo!
What's different than what has been explored before? βWhen DOGE is tweeting about UI data, thatβs not good stewardship of [personally identifiable information],β Evermore said.

Thank you, @epi.org for the number of workers in each state and district page! I've been using it all day helping to explain the shutdown and unemployment for federal workers. (Link in replies.)
I hate that this is always relevant, but here it is: tcf.org/content/comm...
Tomorrow is going to be a big day for unemployment agencies even if the government doesn't shut down, because all the deferred resignation people will be trying to figure out if they are eligble.
This article ran one day ago.
in light of the kimmel news, just a reminder that a few days ago a prominent fox news host literally called for killing homeless people. right afterward, someone shot up a couple homeless encampments.
that fox news host still has his job.
Be careful! Accepting her questline locks you out of the golden age ending.
Pay attention. Something dark might be coming.
The murder of Charlie Kirk could have united Americans to confront political violence. Instead, Trump and his anti-democratic radicals look to be readying a campaign to destroy dissent.
1/ Here's what's happening.
A graphic pointing to a tcf.org commentary, "Our Unemployment System Needs Modernizing: Trump is Doing the Opposite," written by former acting Sec. of Labor Julie Su, Andrew Stettner, and Michele Evermore, featuring a photo of construction workers and grayscale headshots of the authors.
Today, The Century Foundation published a new report from three of the nation's leading experts on unemployment insurance: Sec. @juliesulabor.bsky.social, and @aimstettner.bsky.social and @micheleevermore.bsky.socialβleaders of DOLβs Office of UI Modernization during the pandemic: go.tcf.org/ui
Trump's Labor Dept. wants to create a national database of unemployment insurance claims. Expert @micheleevermore.bsky.social warns this will drain state budgets, expose workers' private wage data, and make fraud easier by centralizing all records in one system. news.bloomberglaw.com/esg/punching...
All of the alarm numbers that I look for in a jobs report are flashing red right now: Black unemployment is up nearly a point and a half from last year, marginally attached is up, U6 climbing, youth unemployment is 10.6% and Black youth unemployment is a stunning 24.8%. RAGE and tariffs are bad.
π¨ Join our next rally on September 5, the 143rd anniversary of Labor Day, to stand up for workers!
Why is the White House embedding social media teams with FBI arrest teams? They wouldn't do that to go after undocumented cooks or teenage hooligans. (Link to story in comments.) Who are they going to arrest with the social media teams in tow?
West Virginia is sending 300-400 national guard to DC, South Carolina is sending 200, Ohio is sending 150. What's the plan here? Is there a resistance or what?
