Housing The Homeless Saves Money--Here's The Research That Proves It The best way to stop homelessness is mindbogglingly simple: Give them homes.

β€œProviding the homeless with a place to live may seem like a high taxpayer cost. But the alternative, it turns out, is more costly, research shows. Subsidized accommodation could actually be a bargain for the public, in purely economic terms.”

Bike rack with made in Wisconsin label

Why are bike racks from Wisconsin so cheesy? You can’t lock your bike to them the way they are intended so you have lock them sideways or lock them at the ends. πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ

Text explaining how there isn’t a war on cars, with all the benefits of reallocating street space to move a lot more people with a lot less space and other consequences, including life and death, pollution/emissions, public and personal costs, etc. Providing more choices works better for everyone, including drivers. And more transportation choices support the economic competitiveness of cities, as smart cities know.

I’m not a fan of politicians trying to make people angry for votes by claiming there actually IS a β€œwar on cars” (there isn’t β€” if anything there’s been a war on every OTHER way of getting around since the 1960s).

A politician just made the claim on LinkedIn. Here’s the reply I posted. #UrbanTruth

Yes that can be the case, but generally it’s a closer to truth than a passing comment on SM. πŸ˜€

I rarely ride downtown at rush hour these days, but was happy to see it's still just as satisfying to pass all the cars stuck in gridlock on center street. #yycbike

Calculation of danger of moving objects is:

KE = 1/2 * mass * velocity ^2

So yes, heavy vehicles at high speed present the most danger on the streets. πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ

There’s a process for bringing them onside. It’s called 311 and reporting non compliance to 24 hour rule for clearing snow after a snow fall.

I can understand this appeal of this approach by City planners, MUPs seem to draw less negative attention from critics.

Drivers don’t see it so much as β€œroad space I can’t drive on” and MUPs are viewed as being available for other things and not just bikes.

Would be great to see an engagement plan from Bike Calgary with each City councillor, including a ward ride along.

It’s easy for critics to throw stones at bike infra when people are unknown. Much more difficult when critics meet, get to know each other and there is an understanding of the issues.

The cost of that project could very well be $1M per block… and that’s all aspects included like sidewalks for walking, separation for bicycling and fresh asphalt for driving.

Bottom line is all concrete, asphalt and street control systems are expensive, no matter what mode they’re for.
