It was great. I tried a couple of times to get a good picture, but neither really captures it

I follow you here for what you do now, but Red Dwarf was the first programme I was allowed to stay up past the watershed to watch. It holds a special place in my heart. Very sad to hear the news.

Kingdom Come: Deliverance also gets this. It's a shorthand, but that's useful if you want to quickly convey some idea of a character's background.

This thread is worth it for the photos of early EVs alone.

(I remember thinking that "Who Killed The Electric Car?" was paranoia and ascribing malice to simple business factors and the utter convenience of liquid fossil fuels, but now I'm not so sure about that).

Reminds me of Andre 3000's "I Swear, I Really Wanted to Make a 'Rap' Album but This Is Literally the Way the Wind Blew Me This Time"

If you fancy extra Tolkien nerdery, the Shelves By Genre podcast from the @rangedtouch.bsky.social folks is diving in and I'd recommend based on previous series

Why does regulation often feel so toothless? It has become a common complaint that regulators in the UK are toothless and ineffective. Unable to keep up with the pace of the internet…

New personal piece: Why does regulation often feel so toothless?

The news is full of businesses behaving badly and seeming to get off very lightly. Why? As someone who used to work for a regulator, I wanted to set out some of the very simple reasons regulators struggle…

It's hard work, but I actually think reading things like that with them end up being quite a good way to have some conversations which are worth having, but otherwise difficult to raise

this is really well-written and informative tech crit - the best piece i have read on gas town and the future of agent orchestration and distance from code

Second the Philip Reeve books. Mortal Engines and Railhead series both popular in this house. Haven't noticed anyone mentioning the first three Earthsea books yet which hold up very well and I think are good for that age. Tehanu not so much.

We're currently on the Silmarillion. Not my suggestion, but am enjoying it a bit more this time round, going in knowing what it's like. Pronouncing all the names is a challenge though.

Facebook Workplaces was the best solution I've seen for status updates and it's a shame that it was doomed by being Facebook Workplaces

β€˜It’s scary how many St George’s flags there were’: Blood Orange on coming home to Essex and mourning his mother After grief brought Dev Hynes home, he reconsidered the county that shaped him. The result is a masterful new album – made with a little help from Lorde and Zadie Smith

The new album from Blood Orange is one I keep coming back to. www.theguardian.com/music/2025/o...

Looking at your list, I'd recommend Gorogoa if you haven't already tried it. Very much fits the singular vision, expressed through the mechanics vein.

a man in a suit and tie stands in a crowd Alt: There are dozens of us. DOZENS!

I can confuse people because I'm fairly shy, but massively draw energy from being around and chatting to others if I get over that initial hump

I suspect the bsky demographic is pretty heavily weighted towards those of us who remember that 6 months when we were hyped for the semantic web and triple stores.

Phil does the London Marathon One of my sons has Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis (JIA). He's now doing well, but at it's worst he was in too much pain to go to school and for a long time was unable to join in games with his friends

I got very lucky and have a place for next year's London Marathon. I'm hoping, as part of that, to raise some money for @jarproject.bsky.social who help children, like my son, that have arthritis. If you'd like to donate 2026tcslondonmarathon.enthuse.com/pf/phil-wills is the place

Don't fall for the lesser lie that it isn't well integrated. I grew up there, my brother lives there. It's not some monocultural ghetto. Easy to get a bad photo with the bin strike though, as in any other part of Birmingham.

Robert Jenrick complained of β€˜not seeing another white face’ in Birmingham neighbourhood Shadow justice secretary criticised for suggesting he could tell how integrated Handsworth was based on short visit

Handsworth is where my mum worked and I went to scouts and church. It's where my brother and his family live and work. It has people from many backgrounds living with, not just alongside each other. That doesn't matter to those with Jendrick's mindset www.theguardian.com/politics/202...

I find them useful for work and they're better than they were a few years ago. Few technologies manage as much as 10% efficiency gains, but that does feel like a pretty optimistic scenario for LLMs right now. Hard to predict where they'll be in 5 years, but...

Once had to get back from Brum on a Sunday when the Euston line was down and Villa had been hosting West Ham. It would have been a pain by myself, but with the boys it was really not much fun.
