βWe have a real chance to put the final nail in the coffin of Drax and the biomass industry. But theyβre never going to be the ones to put themselves in the ground. Itβs our job to fight them to the very end.β

Converted from coal to biomass in 2018, Lynemouth burns up to 1.5 million tonnes of wood every year. The UKβs 2nd biggest such power station also sources wood from Draxβs pellet mills in British Columbia. thenortherneco.substack.com/p/stop-burni... @stopburningtrees.bsky.social
Never trust Drax; be it with jobs or climate solutions. Drax will always prioritise profit above all else.
Responding to this will require a thread, not yet sure how long!

Let's start with what we know...
Burning wood pellets for power receives billions in subsidies, but according to scientists, it may not be clean energy. Companies like Drax are clear-cutting forests and trees for energy and harming communities in the process. www.forbes.com/sites/kensil...
Itβs #CleanAirNight! Did you know that wood burning is the most polluting way to heat your home? Air pollution from domestic burning contributes to nearly 2,500 deaths in the UK each year.

β The tides are turning. Drax is being sued by communities they operate in and UK workers, as well as their own shareholders. It's high time they were held to account...
β BREAKING: DRAX HAS VIOLATED U.S ENVIRONMENTAL LAWS 18,000 TIMES β
π° A new report by land and climate review shows even more brazen violations by the UK's biggest carbon polluter Drax, who continue to choke and harm communities in the southern U.S whilst profiting from UK billpayers.
β The university of York has a responsibility to lead by example when it comes to the climate crisis and this means cutting ties with polluters. βοΈ Add your name to our open letter if you are a graduate.

The corporation is also under investigation by the Financial Conduct Authority, and has violated environmental regulations 11,378 times since 2014 in the US alone.
β£οΈ Drax is currently being sued by communities in the southern U.S for poisoning residents, as well as by it's own workers in the UK for failing to protect employees from wood dust pollution.

π The university claims to uphold the values of sustainability, human rights and academic integrity. π₯ Yet, the university has partnered with the UK's biggest carbon polluter, Drax, for a bid to build an AI data centre

This is absurd. Drax is currently under investigation by the FCA, being sued by communities in Mississippi AND workers here in Yorkshire over relentless air pollution - and now we're handing them over Β£1m a day to keep burning trees and destroying our planet.

Govt and Drax have now finalised this contract, with a slightly lower price of Β£110/MWh in 2012 prices (Β£153/MWh)

Today is International Day of Action on Big Biomass, we're joining @environmentalpaper.bsky.social @stopburningtrees.bsky.social & groups globally to call on governments to Cut Subsidies Not Forestsβ. $250 billion in subsidies for #BigBadBiomass supports an industry that undermines efforts to reduce emissions, pollutes communities and degrades forests and biodiversity. Read more environmentalpaper.org/2025/10/burn...
Industrial biomass isnβt clean or green. According to @rachelcarsondc.bsky.social, itβs more carbon-intensive than coal, destroys forests, and harms communities. Itβs time to end biomass subsidies & the industryβs expansion. More: rachelcarsoncouncil.org/wp-content/u...

π§ In a powerful new podcast, community leaders Dr Krystal Martin and Kathy Egalnd share the truth about how #Drax is fuelling "environmental racism", βpimping poverty,β & devastating lives - while pretending to save the planet, & reaping billions in subsidies.

It's outrageous that a UK company, subsidised by us bill payers, has been causing so much harm to communities like Gloster with their poisonous pollution.
Expanding Drax's pollution limits is the LAST thing Gloster needs.

For years, Gloster has suffered under Drax's deadly pollution, leaving young children with asthma unable to play outside, and elderly community members relying on costly breathing medication.
We stand in full solidarity with Gloster.

New research finds the Drax AI Data Centre would burn 2.5 MILLION tonnes of wood up to 2030, and then rising to 5 MILLION tonnes going forward
If approved, it means years more of Drax's dirty tree burning at the cost of forests, communities & our planet
