UK must stockpile food in readiness for climate shocks or war, expert warns Prof Tim Lang says country produces far less food than it needs to feed population and is particularly vulnerable

These warnings about food security are happening almost weekly now

But does anyone think the government is taking a blind bit of notice

The UKs 3 worst harvests have been in the last 5 years

By 2050, the number of calories per head globally could be halved

I see racists have come to Edinburgh to exploit fears and whip up hate following the knife incident in the Calders. Worth noting Scotland sees over 4,000 serious knife crimes a year, the vast majority of which are committed by white people of British ancestry. Don't let the hatemongers mislead you.

The English word "shark" was two different meanings: a predatory cartilaginous fish and a predatory scoundrel. We sometimes understand the predatory scoundrel to be by metaphor from the predatory fish, but evidence suggests these two meanings have entirely separate originsβ€”German … and Maya??

Anti-immigration protest organiser in court after threatening cop outside hotel Connor Graham, 28, pleaded guilty to behaving in a threatening or abusive manner towards a police officer.

The Sheriff said, "It's somewhat ironic that your claimed motivation for being there was concern about public safety. You have an extensive record yourself. You seem to be the risk to your community..."

damn it’s crazy how the slurs filled the chat all by themselves. couldn’t be helped i’m sure. chats are always devolving of their own accord

Two informational signs on a railing:

Making a soliton wave

In 1834, while investigating how to make canal boats run faster, young engineer John Scott Russell was watching two horses pulling a barge. When they suddenly stopped, the wave created by the vessel's bow continued to move forward.

Chasing the wave

The wave created by the boat travelled at over eight miles per hour, so fast that Russell had to follow it on horseback. The wave kept its shape and speed for over a mile!

So Philip Glass just joined TikTok. He only has like 4 posts and they’re simply him in what I assume is his living room playing the piano. First comment on one I saw was β€œyour piano is too close to the fireplace, you’ll dry it out” and if that’s not the internet in a nutshell I don’t know what is.

Mass stranding of whales on Scottish beach caused by loyalty to their pod, report finds The 55 pilot whales, which had to be euthanised, had been following a female having a difficult birth, scientists believe The mass stranding and death of 55 whales on the Isle of Lewis in 2023 was caused by the mammals’ loyalty to their pod, a report has concluded. I have a question. Without intending to sound conspiratorial or prejudiced, did people in England celebrate New Year's Eve with fireworks before the 21st century?

Smoky jungle frog, Guyana

Smoky jungle frog, Guyana

It's hard to get a sense of scale from this, but the smoky jungle frog is the largest amphibian I've ever seen. We first saw it in Ecuador 20 years ago (my wife still refers to it simply as the "Hypnotoad"), and I had a chance to nab this photo this January in Guyana.

(Guinea pig-sized, I'd say.)

This just isn't true. The 1951 convention requires state parties to facilitate the integration and naturalisation of refugees because the people who drafted it weren't moral vacuums or stupid enough to think that persecution that made people flee for their lives would magically go away in a year.

If your economy is being kept afloat by an AI bubble, one thing you can do to keep it ticking is have a war to make AI look really useful for profitable things that you love doing - such as bombing countries.

Today is St Piran's Day, feast day of the patron of tin miners and of Cornwall herself.

So, we go out west and hear a story of Jan Tregeagle, Cornwall’s own Faust, who rose from doing penance for his sins in Dozmary Pool, with hellhounds on his trail.
