Sorry I'm not more open-minded about LLMs, it's just some fucking maniacs shoveled out a bunch of useless bloatware featuring that technology, did not give me any chance to opt out, reorganized the entire economy around it, zeroed out gains made by green energy, and made it impossible to buy RAM

FTC Admits Age Verification Violates Children’s Privacy Law, Decides To Just IgnoreΒ That We've been pointing out the fundamental contradiction at the heart of mandatory age verification laws for years now. To verify someone's age online, you have to collect personal data from them. If that someone turns out to be a child, congratulations: you've just collected personal data from a child without parental consent. Which is a direct violation of the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act…

I want to do a "King in Yellow" style anthology of short stories for my world, as a way to put guardrails on the magic.

Unfortunately I think I need to finish the first novel before I can actually dig into how that anthology will happen, because short stories work differently.

Fame gets tiring very quickly (even at my *extremely* low level experience of it). Money on the other hand rarely gets old.

At the point where I want to spend a month referring to most current-trend tech (genAI, prediction markets, etc) with satanic-panic style language, just to see what happens.

The only thing stopping me is the knowledge of what it would do to my youtube recommendations.

Eight of 10 people using Winnipeg Transit to get downtown unhappy after system overhaul, BIZ survey reveals Tefere Kahsay has few options: downsize, move his store to another location or close the business. He rang through a couple of customers at an otherwise-empty Graham Convenience Store. One man, perhap...

β€œPeople with disabilities were most likely, in the Probe survey, to believe nearly every aspect of the transit system is worse.”
This has been the experience of Project SEARCH students dependent on Public Transit to get to/from their placements.
Downtown is just harder to plug in to.

Seconded by an old SEO head.

Never build your home on rented land. Having your own website is NOT expensive and is very worthwhile.

NEW: A hobbyist has created Nearby Glasses, an app that warns you if someone close by is wearing smart glasses. 404 Media spoke to the creator who said he was inspired by our coverage that uncovers how men are wearing Meta's Ray-Bans to covertly film massage parlor workers.

Healing magic but limited to some very specific purposes. This is one area of 'common' fantasy magic I've been hesitant to even allow, because of plot.

Like all regulated magics, it's tied to a set of semiprecious stones. In this case, greens with inclusions, like malachite and fluorite.

"So he was attacked by a mob?"

"Er, no he was arrested by the police"

"But it was a moral panic based on outlandish smears?"

"Er, no, there's evidence that he abused his office and shared confidential information."

"So why is this bad?"

"Um… woke?"

Today is the 3rd slopiversary of us having to temporarily close submissions. The problem of "AI"-generated submissions hasn't gone away and is still a huge waste of our time. House policy remains the same: #noAI stories, translation, art, or anything else.

As I've noted before (but is worth noting again!), I have it as a contract point that cover art has to be done by humans. One, because it solves many issues involving copyright and licensing and assures a unique cover. Two, PAY ACTUAL HUMANS FOR ACTUAL HUMAN ART, it's really just that simple.

Your wallet is the top of the tech stack - Blog, Marketing Strategy, Social Media, Technology | Ian M Rountree Figuring out what the top of the tech stack actually IS can be a challenge. The answer is usually your wallet (or extracting money from it).

Wor, blog post be upon ye.

I have thoughts about the way we talk about our hobbies, access to creativity, and second order burdens.

Grev badly wants to pass through the world unnoticed - doing his own thing, quietly.

Unfortunately, being who he is, that just keeps failing to be an option.

This HAS BEEN a problem for years, with jobs requiring online applications, with media requiring support structures to access.

It's not new, but the push should be making these issues more visible, and it's not happening. That's deeply worrying to me.

GenAI's a carrot we buy our own stick for.

In food security, we're very careful about accepting or disbursing items that place a burden on the recipient. Like Mac'n'Cheese (shelf stable) requiring milk and butter (perishable).

Try not to give someone a charitable gift that places an added burden on them to use, when avoidable.

Think about the level of consumer behaviour required just to access GenAI in the first place.

A computer/phone, an internet connection, a normative use and understanding of language, a perception of conformal limits close enough that the model will accept your writing.

My adolescence can be precisely described by the fact that I learned to touch-type by hanging out in a busy X-Files chat room on CompuServe where I had to break typing speed records to get my deep and insightful comments in before the conversation moved on
