i have discovered over time that my preference in rpgs is for dungeons to have any level of dungeon design at all, even if it's annoying and tedious. bad dungeon design is preferable to none dungeon design

It was also as good at its job as I remember it being, because I do remember that main villain being absolutely repugnant, and as an actual adult now it hits a lot harder. My co-commentator was uncomfortable that whole time, and I bet the chat was too. Interesting experience, though!

I's a really interesting thing to be probably the only person to have produced video content for a game in likely 17 years. MISSING was a hell of a nostalgia trip for me and a bit of closure: I distinctly remember failing on the final step of that game in middle school. We succeeded this time!

there's a sort of special feeling of cheating that's only available when you're working with virtual machines. swapping a game's files into a shared folder, patching it through your actual computer because deltapatcher is a 64-bit only program now, and then copying it back to the VM and it works

Instead, Nioh 3 litters the entire open world with important upgrades, like the Ninja and Samurai hairs, skill books, and similar - all of which is important character build stuff, so realistically it's all necessary to do, but also doesn't have a tight difficulty curve because of its nonlinearity.

Elden Ring's loot structure more or less actually works for its open world and doesn't require you to do much in the way of busywork outside of the DLC. Realistically, you don't have to actually play most of Elden Ring; just the stuff to get what you want. That's not true with how Nioh 3 is set up.

"Better than Nioh 1 for sure, but given Nioh 2 exists and is a nearly perfect video game and plays so similarly that you can't help but notice and nitpick the many fundamental downgrades from it to Nioh 3" is my current feelings on it. I'll still play, complete, and enjoy it, I'm like guaranteed to.

I'm sighin' here. I am still enjoying how it plays on the whole, though. I think that adding jumping as a baseline action may have been a mistake, too - it doesn't work it into fundamental gameplay like Elden Ring does, where it's a powerful defensive option there. It's mostly just for platforming.

It's really annoying, because this is like, a fundamental design mistake that is also fundamentally built into the game. I don't think there's any fixing this except by like, patching the Samurai version of those weapons back in (and therefore making Ninja Mode even more pointless than it was.)

But Tonfa, Splitstaff, and Kusarigama are all weapons that had beloved movesets that have been gutted in Ninja Mode. They're not nearly as interesting as they were in Nioh 2. It's really unfortunate to see those get worse because of an arbitrary split that doesn't really add anything to the game.
