I'm actually playing through this for the first time (I know) and it's genius!

With the industry in a slump and money even harder to come by we wondered if we could help, in our small but unique way, by offering our services to those in need for FREE!

Dealing with my Vampire Survivors addiction by playing Balatro.
This is fine...
A week ago I finally got a Steam Deck and downloaded Vampire Survivors.
I think I need rehab...

Thanks!

Congrats!
Same, I realised it wasn't a net positive whenever I used it so it's gone.
Most of us will never finish our Steam backlogs, let alone spend any time on "generated" content.
I can share animation again! Here's an old one from Hellblade

When you wake up and realise you don't have a neck:
I know right? As an animator I'm literally powerless without them.
I honestly feel powerless on here without GIFs
I appreciate that nobody is arguing about industry standard software over here.
It's hard to argue with that (at least from my perspective). I'd also be interested in the Why Nots?
All I could think of is pursuit of mastery/specialisation in particular disciplines that I think only AAA allows.
Each of those seems to be a AAA tax. In keeping the team small, you have to unsubscribe from the bigger/better/more creep of subsequent games in order to avoid ending up back in the same situation. This conflicts with the endless growth model companies are a part of.
I agree, there is some magic to it that's hard to get across unless you've experienced it first hand. It also comes with other benefits:
- smaller scope relative to team
- things move faster
- more autonomy
- more individual accountability
- quicker dev cycle
A common career path for game developers seems to be:
- climb the ladder at multiple AAA studios
- quit to start an indie studio
- if successful, manage an indie/AAA studio
- quit to start an indie studio...
What drives this? Interested in any thoughts/pov's from those going through it.
๐ Hey I'm Chris and I'm a Principal Animator on the new Fable at Playground Games. I've been a gamedev for over 14years (I had to stop and count, that's crazy) starting my career at Ninja Theory.
If you're games industry and following some folks already, reply with who you are and what you do, and then re-post this or whatever it's called. Let's try and find each other on this new place
Hello! I've been in this industry over 14 years now. Currently I'm a Principal Animator on the new Fable at Playground games. Before that I was at Ninja Theory working on everything from Enslaved right up to Hellblade.
