Tory’s $100,000 Rogers post, the quiet undoing of ActiveTO — here’s some city hall items you may have missed Has the goalposts for what should be an issue or scandal shifted under COVID-19?

The Canadian establishment is fascinating.

Was it wrong for his critics to talk about Tory being on the Rogers payroll while he was mayor? Or was it tawdry to do so?

Not something the Canadian establishment would do?

The thing is this is known among people who know (what this piece might call his "critics") but nobody writes about it cuz it's his pvt biz. The only paper who named the person was their hometown paper in Sault Saint Marie. Yet this "defence" column is the one that dishes!

The political attack ad that backfired badly in 1993 | CBC A TV ad that asked, "Is this a prime minister?" urged voters to "think twice" about electing a government led by Jean Chrétien in 1993.

Also the bizarre claim about protecting his family from the dirty politics coming. Tory is the guy behind the ad that made fun of Chretien’s facial paralysis! Tory is the OG dirty backroom politics.

It cost the city millions of dollars to rerun the mayoral election. Millions.

🧐

"Incidentally, some critics should look in the mirror today and ask themselves whether they judged the former mayor too harshly when revelations about his relationship with someone on his staff became public. This was not a tawdry fling with some junior staffer."

1010 & TVO framed Tory misconduct as an affair. FTR he had a secret romance with a junior staffer who reported to him. He helped get her a job at Rogers-owned MLSE in a role dealing with him & his office on issues involving public funds. He then voted at city council on an issue she handled at MLSE

I don't know if I'd give films a lot of thought and focus if it weren't for the discussions that happened afterwards...I'm a pretty lazy thinker. But! I love being pressed to think about things. I just gotta figure out how to do it for myself, how to reach those good ideas...

06.03.2026 18:51 👍 2 🔁 0 💬 1 📌 0

Anyways, a movie that's probably not going to leave my mind for a while

06.03.2026 18:46 👍 2 🔁 0 💬 0 📌 0

(and then there's the whole thing about how Grey Gardens pairs up with Camelot and how inverted those two are... Like, who are the people that make up the wealth class? Are they all like this? Like there's an additional layered view of dynasties)

It's also interesting thinking about how film documents the construction of history. It's a weird endless cycle of creativity. Even when the movie ends, there's a sense that the struggle continues long after the film, long after they've left Grey Gardens

I haven't even spoken about little Edie's affection towards the raccoons that are destroying the house. Like, do they characterize that her relationship with the Maysles? (Funny homophone, too, Maysles and measles)

06.03.2026 18:36 👍 4 🔁 0 💬 1 📌 0

I think both families are...it's a fascinating choice on the parts of the Maysles, and the personas that the Kardashians put forward always feel like interesting objects to scrutinize

06.03.2026 18:31 👍 1 🔁 0 💬 0 📌 0

I HAVE to see that!! 😂😂

06.03.2026 18:29 👍 0 🔁 0 💬 1 📌 0

It also feels like little Edie is a prisoner of that house and this responsibility (as the camera seems to allude to as she dances within bars), but one can't wonder if she's just also scared to live. Big Edie also seems like she wants to be with her daughter and can't bear to lose her to New York.

06.03.2026 18:28 👍 4 🔁 0 💬 1 📌 0

Absolutely, and I see what you're saying. But then, should we say the same about every celebrity, that all of them are exploited for entertainment and attention? Like the Kardashians have exploited their fame and manipulated attention for material gain. Like, I'm not sure how I feel about the Beales

06.03.2026 18:26 👍 2 🔁 0 💬 1 📌 0

Both little Edie and big Edie argue over events, and the stakes feel very real for them. "Responsibility is the hallmark of aristocracy," she says at one point. Like, they still see themselves as aristocrats, and all the carelessness that goes with it. But are they aristocrats or are they like...?

06.03.2026 18:23 👍 5 🔁 0 💬 1 📌 0

I found Halloween costumes for little Edie, and like, that totally makes sense. She's completely a character with her own look and everything

06.03.2026 18:19 👍 1 🔁 0 💬 0 📌 0

It's really weird...I read it as the Beales wanting the camera on them so it can add to their own sense of importance. The film almost feels like Big Edie's records: they're a testament to her, and so the film does that for them both. It's another part of their crazy, lurching history

06.03.2026 18:18 👍 2 🔁 0 💬 1 📌 0

I liked it, btw! But definitely what stands out is the whole theme of history. The Beales are like...neck deep in it. And control over it, trying to make sense of it, verifying the truth of it, and feeling a responsibility towards it as it breaks down all around, it sticks out. It feels pronounced.

There's like...a lot to say about this movie 😅

One thing for sure is that it heightens my appreciation of everything else around an evening out, like how my friends and I are treated, the atmosphere...it's interesting

BBC studio left silent after audience asked if 'UK should be involved in Iran war' BBC Question Time host Fiona Bruce was left stunned due to the live audience's reaction after being asked if they believed the UK should be involved…

This should have been no surprise - as the article states, 49% of Britons oppose involvement in Trump's war, and only 28% are in favour.
