At least we got decent coverage of the race for the rest of the podium
At least we got decent coverage of the race for the rest of the podium
Oh also: the whole tone of this blog post!
Is it a brag, a cautionary tale, a horror story, an incident report, just a straightforward journal? I really canβt tell
My favourite bits are
- Claude told me not to, but I did it anyway
- while it was doing the (seemingly correct) fix, adding the old state file into the mix to confuse things, which made destroy target more stuff
Agentic engineering is driving the cost of code to zero but the cost of good taste and product sense is going to go sky-high.
Hannah Spencer walking into Westminster, sucking her teeth, tutting, and muttering "tell you what, you've had some cowboys in here."
a sombre morning for british columnists as they move their "The electorate has spoken, we must listen" articles to the recycling bin and upload their "the greens victory shows just how far the west has fallen" articles instead
Do you have anything planned in this series on how you approach sandboxing / permissions for an agent?
This metaphor lands so well!
I got a great question on my Ramadan thread: do Muslims also need to avoid consumption by proxy in videogames? Does consuming in-game food or drink break the fast? Basically: does your character have to go fast?
The answer is no, unless you happen to be playing Sonic the Hedgehog.
for what it's worth, i've found the key to being good at something, beyond the usual time money and access to equipment, is simply enjoying being bad at something
if you can't enjoy sucking at a thing, you'll never spend time on it
What's that you say!
It was all just fear pushing by bad faith groups and that trans women pose no threat to cisgender women.

inspired by CLAUDE.md, Iβve started putting markdown files named after coworkers into work code repos so I can remind them to stop doing shit to the codebase that annoys me
for some reason theyβre all mad at me now, which means ill be adding commands to JEREMY.md for an attitude adjustment
Once a baby starts moving around sleep sacks are much easier at bedtime ime
Iβm not fundamentally opposed to deterministically committing the output of a nondeterministic process
I just remain skeptical that people/agents know how to optimise for continual future change - weβre bad enough at that with existing dev methods
This is mostly true, but also I find that in practice if you do need to read it for something - you still can!
And I mostly believe that the best dependencies (that get good adoption etc) are the ones where the interfaces are well defined
Iβm still on the fence about whether Iβm being left behind, or Iβm correctly waiting until the tools have matured to properly adopt anything
Meanwhile Iβm still coding the way Iβve been doing for many years: with care
Steve sure seems excited, but I canβt see how having multi-million LoC codebases that no-one has actually read is really going to sustain in the medium term.
The hard bit in software has never been starting, itβs been in maintaining momentum under the weight of your code over time
A good rule of thumb Iβve found in life is that either all of us win or none of us win. It may involve tactical losses but the grand scheme can never be won if we sacrifice our own.
Keep those arms linked together.
I think Transactual put it best (in reference to the girl guides) and now Labour too:
"There is no problem being solved here, only harm being done."
All to appease the right, who hate them anyway - shame on them.
Johann Lamont @JohannLamontβ’ 1d X Girlguiding decision important yet it all makes me sad. The Guides meant so much to me but the announcement is so grudging, so reluctant, so concerned about the impact on boys, I wonder if it can ever again give girls the brilliant, confidence building space in which I thrived. β’ 93 {7 316 O3.1K I|41K β’
Note how these awful people are getting exactly the exclusions of children that they demanded and *that still isnβt enough for them*: they demand everyone be delighted about it and kiss their arses for being brilliant.
Accenture claim that tech debt costs $2.4T in the US alone. Which they should know, because they caused most of it.
If we donβt signal our virtue every now and again - then so many believe they are utterly alone - βvirtue signallingβ is not there to say βarenβt I goodβ but βthere are more of us than you might imagineβ and βfuck you for demanding that only the brutal and the bullies may speakβ
What proportion of attendees were engaged or contributed?
I'm so sick of discourse from supposed allies about where trans people went wrong.
Where we "went wrong" is that billionaires spent unimaginably large sums to attack us repeatedly and major media outlets have spent a decade piling on.
@quinnypig.com do you have any good guidance for submitting AWS SLA claims? I could see that being popular right about now
What other definition could there be?
Itβs obviously contextual, but in my current position we suffered a 1 hour outage at the same time as lots of larger & more famous companies were in the mainstream news
We can stomach that
Could I architect for multi region? Sure, probably
Can I do it economically? Not even close, even if todayβs issues happened twice a year instead of once every 3 or 4.
Buff Guys Typing on Laptops Meme doing a little honeycomb propaganda about wide events
Somehow this one didn't get wiped from the @honeycomb.io laptop before I bought it after leaving.
@lizthegrey.com and @charity.wtf feel free to use this if you want, although questionable if you'd want to
it's kinda weird that all the software i am expected to use for work are all written by distributed teams, go, python, postgres, linux, chrome, k8s etc
and despite being told "the best teams work in an office together" i don't know of any software i use that's actually written that way
watching the UKs green party elect an actual unafraid leftist into leadership and see party membership double in under a month is once again endless proof that if you stand up for leftist causes and treat the electorate like adults, youβll win people over easily
