what does it mean that small landowners are being asked to lease their land, or at least the carbon inside their trees, to corporations like amazon for 20-year contracts?

i am super excited to share this work and grateful to the @landpolicy.bsky.social for supporting it! ✊

I never understood why Columbus is an Italian hero when he sailed for Spain. Do Italian Americans usually cheer for Spain or only when it involves genocide

There’s this legalized corruption in corporate culture (and in the top parts of academia) where highly paid managers get big bonuses for just doing the job they already are paid a lot of money to do #uofa #garimella

NYC Joins National Effort to Ban Cellphone Use in Schools Gov. Kathy Hochul argued that the “bell-to-bell” ban — which restricts the devices during class, lunch and other parts of school — would help prevent disruption and cyberbullying.

New York will require schools statewide to ban smartphone use during school hours, joining a national movement aimed at preventing compulsive social media use and distractions that interfere with school work, Gov. Kathy Hochul announced.

Trump’s idea to deport US citizens to El Salvador is abhorrent, but it’s not new. Bush using Guantanamo, Obama killing US citizens with drones, … using international spaces to defy US due process is regular executive practice over the last 25 years.

Statement on Palestine, Genocide, and Repression The Department of American Indian Studies issues a statement in support of Palestine.

Yesterday, the U of Minnesota deleted the American Indian Studies’ statement on Palestine. (Also deleted was a story about Leonard Peltier’s return home and five other dept statements on Palestine.) Our expertise matters if we don’t oppose genocide. web.archive.org/web/20250322...

We will not be distracted.
We will not be discouraged.
We’ve got our eyes on the prize.

And we will build the prosperous, free nation for all that we deserve.

The time to organize is now.

The media's focus around the more than 100 Venezuelan nationals who have no gang ties and were transferred* to El Salvador requires a good/bad immigrant dichotomy. It further emphasizes the dehumanization of people who – like each and every single one of us – have made mistakes in life.

Should’ve held up a “this is not normal” sign when Biden was sending bombs to Israel after 10s of thousands of civilian deaths or police were ravaging students on college campuses over Palestine

While reading Farina King’s “The Earth Memory Compass” that documents Diné boarding school experience, I am reminded that English was violently enforced on Native people. To make it the ‘national language’ is to condone this violence and to repeat it on other people.

What we need is real federal commitment to public education which targets disadvantaged communities, including Black, Brown, and Native. We need to replace military recruitment with college recruitment. Take money from defense and put it toward education and restore affirmative action.

I think the bigger problem is universities have failed to keep college education affordable, and it has felt less and less attainable for more people because of the cost, like healthcare … and some universities bask in their selective admittance which creates the room for this kind of shit to happen

What’s more, diversity isn’t just race - it’s class. And it’s always included consideration of poor white folks who haven’t benefited from college education. First gen students of all backgrounds are always priorities.

DEI was always weak feel good language without much mandate at the university, so we shouldn’t pretend it was more than this. But obviously the point is we are incensed that we are even prohibited from talking about diversity. That’s fucked up and fundamental a form of state censorship.
