January 2026 delivered a stark reminder that the climate system can simultaneously deliver very cold weather in one region & extreme heat in another.
These recent events highlight that resilience & adaptation to increasing extremes are key to prepare society for heightened climate risk.
Delighted that this paper is now out for open review. Thanks to @peterthorne.bsky.social for his leadership on this critical topic and bringing the community together

Monthly global surface air temperature anomalies (Β°C) relative to the 1850β1900 pre-industrial reference period from January 1940 to November 2025, plotted as time series for each year. The year 2025 as well as the two warmest calendar years are shown in colour: 2025 in dark red, 2024 in orange, and 2023 in yellow. All other years are shown with thin grey lines. Data source: ERA5. The latest #climate update from Copernicus shows that 2025 is on course to be:
- joint 2nd warmest year, tied with 2023 and behind 2024 (warmest year)
- November 2025 was the 3rd warmest November globally

Global map showing surface air temperature trends for each November period from 1975 to 2024. Only land areas are shown. Red shading is shown for warmer temperature trends, and blue shading is shown for colder temperature trends. Data is from NOAA/NESDIS/NCEI NOAAGlobalTempv6.0.0. The temperature trend scale is from -0.5Β°C/decade to +0.5Β°C/decade. Most areas are warming, though there is some spatial variability.
