They're a traditional Purim cookie among Ashkenazi. They're not associated with Bar Mitzvot or the more widely-known holidays like Hanukkah, so it's not entirely surprising if you've never seen them.

The biggest issue is that, contrary to what many people who really should know better say, space is a bad place to vent heat. It is very hard to vent heat in near-vacuum. You may have heard that space is cold but "cold" is a very counterintuitive idea in an environment without much matter.
